"Tom and Abby Stuart had everything: a perfect marriage, successful careers, and a beautiful twelve-year-old daughter, Caitlin. Then one day Caitlin vanished without a trace. For a while they grasped at every false hope and followed every empty lead, but the tragedy ended up changing their lives, overwhelming them with guilt and dread, and shattering their marriage. Four years later, Caitlin is found alive--dirty and disheveled yet preternaturally calm. She won't discuss where she was or what happened. Then the police arrest a suspect connected to the disappearance, but Caitlin refuses to testify, leaving the Stuarts with a choice: Let the man who may be responsible for destroying their lives walk away, or take matters into their own hands. And when Tom decides to try to uncover the truth for himself, he finds that nothing that has happened yet can prepare him for what he is about to discover"--… (més)

What a load of dross. For an author with so many English qualifications he knows very little about grammar, in particular the present and past tense of lie.

The only reason I persevered was to learn the outcome of this promise on the back cover: "When Tom decides to try to uncover the truth for himself, nothing can preapre him for what he discovers..."

In reality, nothing interesting was discovered at the end further to what we learnt at the beginning of Part 2.

My greatest regret was spending $3 to borrow this from the library.

This author seems to be quite prolific; this is the second of his books that I have read and I'm now removing him from my To Read list as it's clear this his writing is formulaic, basic and predictable. ( )

This was a book about a missing 12 year old girl. A parents worst nightmare. The girl goes missing while walking her dog w/o a trace. The dog comes home but the girl doesn't until 4 years later. The story takes many twists and turns keeping the reader completely off balanced.

This was well written and I will definitely read more books offered by David Bell. If you like 'who dun its' then you will like this one. ( )

Ever watched a crime docuseries with an episode about an abducted girl or young woman who is presumed dead by law enforcement only to be "rescued" years or even decades later? Ever read a memoir written by one of those abductees?

If you answered "yes" to either of the above, then you might want to skip Cemetery Girl. However, if, while watching or reading the above, you longed for a male-centered narrative with less suspense and almost no tension, then you may want to read Cemetery Girl. Think, thriller-lite or cozy thriller. Using "thriller" rather loosely.

Don't let the blurb on the back cover fool you, there is nothing surprising about this book's take on these types of crimes. Other than the fact that the father's experience was front and center - it was all about poor, old dad and how his daughter being kidnapped really messed him up because, you know, he was abused as a kid.

The only actual mystery in the entire book is the question of whether or not Buster, the victim's uncle, was involved. And even that "mystery" felt watered down.

Again, only recommended to mystery fans who want a thriller with few thrills.

1 star - because I finished it
(Now I can mark it off my owned-to-read list and donate it!)

Note: The story is set in New Cambridge, Ohio (fictitious as far as I know) with multiple references to Columbus (real) and Union County (real; where they apprehended this book's criminal, John Colter). ( )

image_539193815256471My Review of “Cemetery Girl ” by David Bell

Well, David Bell, author of “Cemetery Girl”, I blame you for another sleepless night. I had to start your book, and I couldn’t put it down!! So I do have a WARNING for all readers, don’t read this before you go to sleep, or you will have dark circles under your eyes!! This is an intense, suspenseful, chilling, thrilling and captivating read.

Can you even imagine if your child was missing for four years, and then was found walking along the road, and brought home? Isn’t this every parent’s nightmare? In this day and age, we pick up a newspaper and read about kidnappings, murders and terrible crimes. As parents do you blame yourselves? Can you imagine everything that you have gone through for four years? Can you imagine what your daughter has gone through?

David Bell is an amazing storyteller and his descriptions are vivid and detailed. He describes his characters as complex and complicated. There are twists and turns and ups and downs. This fells like a crazy roller coaster ride. The genre is fiction, mystery, suspense and thriller, and yet at times it feels so very real. Well, you know the daughter is home after four years being somewhere. This has taken a toll on the parents. The father is obsessed to find out what happened. Don’t you want to know?

I would highly recommend this book to readers that enjoy a great thriller and suspenseful story. Just be prepared that things are not like they seem, and several characters could be suspect. Again, this comes with a WARNING: Do not read before you go to sleep!!! Happy Reading !! “Cemetery Girl” has a new cover, and is in a new paperback edition which comes out February 6, 2018. ( )
