In this collection of tales, Peter tells us about his blossoming romance with future bride Barbara, the births of his three sons, the challenges of vet school, his crisis of professional confidence, the trials of his early years in practice, the sometimes eccentric people he worked with and learned from, and of course his unforgettable patients and their equally memorable owners. This was an enjoyable read, and somewhat different from most veterinarians' memoirs (in a good way!). While many vet memoirs focus on cute or sad accounts of patient illnesses (along with droll descriptions of eccentric or neurotic clients), Dr. Freyburger's focus is on his journey as a veterinarian, which preceded his undergrad studies. He devotes quite of bit of time to description of his family life, which I quite liked. His account illuminated some aspects of veterinary practice that I had heretofore not really considered (working as an associate, relationships with vet techs, the considerations that inform starting one's own practice).

Dr. Freyburger's memoir is decidedly not great literature, but so what? He writes in an honest and unaffected manner that kept me turning pages. Most important to me, he comes across as a good guy who tries to do right by his patients and clients. Definitely recommended! ( )
