What better way to spend the day than by reading about the apocalypse. So many good writers, so much more to read based on this anthology. I found new authors to look into and came across some old ones I might want to return to! ( )

I read this anthology as a result of reading earlier the Apocalypse triptych by the same editor. While both are anthologies, they are quite different in both authors and themes.
The anthology starts with ‘big names’: Stephen King, Orson Scott Card, Paolo Bacigalupi and George R. R. Martin. Their short stories are a-ok, but not great. Therefore, I initially assumed that this book will be weaker.
Then, boom! The great stories from the authors, whom I have never read before:
• Never Despair by Jack McDevitt, the story set in ‘usual’ post-apocalyptic wastelend, where a group of adventures searches for ancient treasures and found a new hope instead
• When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth by Cory Doctorow, where, as the name implies, geeks ruled the planet after a series of cataclysms
• Artie’s Angels by Catherine Wells, where Arthurian myth is re-made in a new world, maybe the most optimistic story in the book
• Judgment Passed by Jerry Oltion, one of the more unusual stories, judge for yourself: there was a Second coming and the Earth is empty when a group of space colonists returns.
• Mute by Gene Wolfe, more a horror story with much innuendo, made me look for its analysis on the internet after reading
• Intertia by Nancy Kress, a colony of outcasts, quarantined due to the unknown disease not only survives, but in some ways becomes better than the outside world.
• And the Deep Blue Sea by Elizabeth Bear, on sport motorbikes, calamities and race with the devil
• Speech Sounds by Octavia E. Butler, on a world that lost ability to communicate
• Ginny Sweethips’ Flying Circus by Neal Barrett, Jr., a Fallout-universe type of story, with mutants, androids and accountants :)
• The End of the World as We Know it by Dale Bailey, maybe the best story in the book, a kind of meta-story, about both apocalypse and clinches of apocalyptic fiction. Requires some knowledge of the genre to be enjoyed fully
• Episode Seven: Last Stand Against the Pack in the Kingdom of the Purple Flowers by John Langan, a story to some extent based on the abovementioned Bailey’s piece but with addition of some comic book stuff

I am not a great short story fan but I really like post-apocalypse books.

This book was ho-hum to me. I am not a great reader of horror apocalypse. I like stories by authors who try to portray what it would really be like to be in that situation and frankly there is little of that in this collection of stories.

Of 21 stories in this book I only like a few of them:

Bread and Bombs by Mary Rickert
Never Despair by Jack McDevitt
When Sysadmins Rules the Earth by Cory Doctorow
Artie's Angels by Catherine Wells
And the Deep Blue Sea by Elizabeth Bear
Speech Sounds by Octavia E. Butler
Killers by Carol Emshwiller

So I liked 1/3 of the stories but none really stood out for me. It is curious 5 of those "likes" were written by women. ( )

Famine. Death. War. Pestilence. These are said to be the harbingers of the biblical apocalypse--Armageddon, the End of the World. -- from the Introduction
(Introduction): Famine. Death. War. Pestilence.
I want to tell you about the end of war, the degeneration of mankind, and the death of the Messiah -- an epic story, deserving thousands of pages and a whole shelf of volumes, but you (if there are any "you" later on to read this) will have to settle for the freeze-dried version.

If you examine the copyright page of this anthology, you'll note that just two of the stories in this volume were written in the '90s. On the other hand, more than half the stories were originally published since the turn of the millennium. So why the resurgence? Is it because the political climate now is reminiscent of the climate during the Cold War? During times of war and global unease, is it that much easier to imagine a depopulated world, a world destroyed by humanity's own hand?

Is that all there is to it, or is there something more What is it that draws us to those bleak landscapes - the wastelands of post-apocalyptic literature? To me, the appeal is obvious: the desire for a new frontier. It also allows us to start over from scratch, to wipe the slate clean and see what the world may have been like if we had known what we know now.
