Tonatiuh, D. (2011). Diego Rivera: His World and Ours. New York: Abrams Books for Young Readers.

This book celebrates the life and work of artist Diego Rivera. The artwork is reminiscent of his work and traditional Mexican artwork. The story walks us through a simplified version of Rivera’s young life and his entrance into the world of art. It discusses the various places he trained as an artist and several developmental stages of his artwork. The book questions how Rivera would document our modern society through his artwork if he were still alive. The book ends with a glossary of terms and references to help children understand some less common terms about art and Mexican culture. This is followed by an author’s note that gives a more direct biography of Rivera’s artistic life and the author’s own feelings about Rivera as an artist. This book is suitable for children ages 3-7 years. ( )

This book explores the life and history of Diego Rivera. He was a passionate artist and proud of his Mexican heritage. Through his art, he told stories of Mexico's rich history. I liked how the author inserted questions asking what would Diego Rivera paint now if he was alive today. ( )

Diego Rivera: His World and Ours was a very informative autobiography of Diego Rivera’s life. Although children do not usually want to pick up a book and read about an artist’s life, but this book creates an engaging read. To begin with, the illustrations are part of what makes this book so great. The people look like little cartoon characters that make the pages interesting and fun to view along with the facts in the text. The illustrations looked like paintings, which is smart because Diego Rivera was a painter. Each page was like a mural that blended greatly with the representation of his life. In addition, these paintings are a fun way to represent the historical culture of this time period. They all added to the main idea of this book, which was to inform readers about Diego’s life as a famous, Mexican painter. The setup of the book was another reason why it was enjoyable to read. The author wrote most of the book on Diego’s life, but the end was about what Diego might think and paint if he were still alive today. For example, “Maybe Diego would paint shops at the mall as he painted street vendors selling flores.” This was interesting, thought-provoking, and very unique! ( )
