Apunta't a LibraryThing per saber si aquest llibre et pot agradar. No hi ha cap discussió a Converses sobre aquesta obra. This book is an odd mix between brutal reality (to the point where I had real trouble to continue reading due to all the violent torture) and a humorous look at a relationship between men coming from very different cultures. The writing style was as different in various sections as the subject matter. I ended up angry about the violence and the torutre, confused about what the point of the book was (personally, I cannot classify it as romance and it was too humorous to be a thriller, I think), and with some resentment against Shigore who behaved less than honest (in my very Western eyes) in many instances. I was all set up and ready to give this book a 5. I really loved the writing style, the story, the characters, everything (even if at first I had my doubts with all the Japanese words thrown around; there is, after all, a fine line between rightful tossing of foreign words and sounding like you're writing fanfic, but I feel the author managed a good enough balance, all things given). Anyhow, it was a pretty awesome book, in all. What finally made me drop one star was the What an amazing book! Sexy, violent, romantic, exciting, nerve racking...this book puts you through all those emotions and more. The writing was incredible, the author pulls you in from the first chapter on. I agree with another reviewer who wishes the author would continue with these characters. I'd love to read about one of the other characters. (Kinosuke would be awesome!) Recommended!

When yakuza underboss Shigure Matsunaga meets Kenneth Harris at a boring social event, he's surprised to find himself attracted to the blond gaijin with the mismatched eyes. Shigure is even more pleased when he discovers Ken not only speaks Japanese fluently, but is fluent in Japan's ways, even the more violent of the martial arts. Ken's expertise at kendo is not his most striking qualityâit's the passion beneath his quiet, almost fragile exterior that ignites Shigure's lust, and the two come together as explosively as they spar. Shigure is a dangerous man in a dangerous position. He's been trying to keep the peace with the Daito-kaiâhis hated rivalsâbut the danger on the streets is escalating, threatening those Shigure most wants to protect. He may claim to love his gaijin, but before he can keep Ken safe, Shigure will have to overcome hostility from his people, a hidden enemy, and, the most insidious opponent of all, his own hard-won pride. I loved so much about it. Everything went just a touch deeper than it first seemed, and that to me is always a good sign. It shows the author knows how to show instead of telling.
Had this just been a romance, it still would have been good, but not as good. The suspense aspect gave the story the oomph it used to its advantage. Such a clever thing to do, and it shows the author wanted for the reader to read a unique story, not a 13-in-12 tale.
Ken must be one of the strongest male characters I've ever read about. What he went through and how he dealt with it was beautifully (and brutally) written. And the fact that what happened to him made Shigure see where he went wrong and how to fix it made him just that much more likeable and seem less rigid, less the Yakuza underboss, and more the man who's in love with another man.
Admittedly, the very ending took a turn I found uncharacteristic for everyone involved. So far they'd "acted their age", but what happened kind of made them appear younger, but I'm not holding it against the book since I liked it so much otherwise. ( )
