Loved it! ( )

Author did a good job using the three different girls telling their version and thoughts without a lot of jumping back and forth in time. Grew to understand what was going through the mind of each one. Finally understand more of why Henry had so many wives. Unfortunately a lot of repetition about Henry's condition, repeating their desires for a better life. Felt sorry for Anne of Cleves for the way she was brought up and realizing too late that it did not work well with Henry. Really wondered about Katherine and her wanton ways, could she have been that self-centered, clueless at 15 yrs. Jane was the one I liked in the beginning but even power got to her and then to have such a worthless uncle as the advisor. ( )

This was good. I like the merging of the stories of Anne of Cleves, Jane Boleyn and Queen Kitty. The women have such vastly different temperaments makes for a nice balance. I expected Three Sisters, Three Queens to be more similar in format to this novel.
I appreciate the sympathetic portrait of Jane Boleyn, Lady Rochford. History has not been kind to her. Jane's a small person but the author does attempt to add depth to this much maligned person. ( )

I am not a fan of historical fiction, especially the type that features romance. I don't like the romanticizing, the stilted language that many authors think makes it seem "authentic", the manners. Even worse, I dislike the insertion of a "modern" woman into a historical place, unless she is so carefully constructed that I can believe it.

This is a pretty decent piece of work. It features three women who lived in Henry the Eighth's court: Anne of Cleves, about to be married to the king, Katherine Howard, a ditzy young woman from a good family, who is among the new queen's maids, and Jane Rochford, aka Boleyn, who had testified against her husband and sister-in-law, causing their executions. Jane manages the maids to the queen.

At the start of the story, Henry has just recently lost his wife, Jane Seymour, to illness related to the birth of her son. He is anxious to have another son, to assure the progression of the Tudor monarchy (he was only the second Tudor king and his place on the throne did not assure succession of his daughters). Anne of Cleves is German, her father the head of German protestantism. Because of his desire to strengthen protestant ties (he was excommunicated from the Catholic Church when he had his marriage to his first wife annulled so that he could marry Anne Boleyn), the king thought Anne a suitable match. However, when he first saw her he did not find her attractive. "A Flanders mare," is what he called her. Gregory suggests that it was the restrictive, overly modest German clothing that originally caused this dislike, and Anne's care to never present herself as immodest or sexual in any way might have furthered his dislike.

Anne takes a liking to Katherine Howard, whose character is wholly different from her own. When the king starts to pay obvious attention to the teen, Anne maintains her presence.

Jane, meanwhile, conspires with her uncle to bring about changes that might bring her greater position in the court.

The king delays coronation of Anne, his eye still on Katherine. He finds a way to whisk Anne off the throne and put in Katherine instead. Katherine's age belies her experience in some areas, so she is able to please the king in bed as much as is possible for a sick, very fat, probably impotent man. From here, though, Henry shows increasing signs of a mind that is possibly going mad. His behavior worsens. Nobody is safe.

This is an interesting way to get inside one of the monarchies in a way that the history books can't let us. Gregory did a great deal of research but she made up reasons for some actions, and of course gave us full portraits of people about whom little is really known. The book reminds me that, in some ways, life on this earth is better than it was in the past.

Another historical novel by Philippe Gregory. The continuation of the story of the royal court of Henry VIII, a few years after the events in the previous book.

It is the story of the court, palaces, and wives of King Henry VIII. King Henry is an adult king approaching the age of 50, crippled and wounded in his leg, and still reigns in the kingdom.
The story told from three ribs, three female characters, each episode moving from one aspect to another, and so on.
All three are prominent women from the court.

Unlike the previous book I read non-stop, and it was full of events, in this book I felt that the writer simply tried to fill the pages with words. There is not much plot going on and worse, there's always a repetition of the same ideas. I also didn't like the fact that things presented in the previous book in one way now show the opposite. ( )
