KIRKUS REVIEWLanday does the seemingly impossible by coming up with a new wrinkle in the crowded subgenre of courtroom thrillers.Assistant District Attorney Andy Barber is called to a gruesome crime scene after Ben Rifkin, a 14-year-old boy, has been brutally stabbed in a city park. One suspect seems likely, a pedophile who lives nearby and is known to frequent the park, but suspicion turns quickly to another, much more unlikely, suspectAndy?s son Jacob, one of Ben?s classmates. It seems Ben was not the paragon of virtue he was made out to be, for he had a mean streak and had been harassing Jacob...but is this a sufficient motive for a 14-year-old to commit murder? Some of Jacob?s fellow students post messages on Facebook suggesting he?s guilty of the crime, and Jacob also admits to having shown a ?cool? knife to his friends. When Andy finds the knife, he quickly disposes of it, but even he?s not sure if he does this because he suspects his son is innocent or because he suspects his son is guilty. Complicating the family dynamic is Laurie, Jacob?s mother, who?s at least half convinced that her son might indeed be capable of such a heinous act¥and it turns out Andy has concealed his own past from Laurie because both his father and grandfather have been murderers, and he fears he may have both inherited and passed down to Jacob a gene associated with aggressive behavior in males.Landay is yet another lawyer-turned-writer, and it?s inevitable that he?ll be compared to Scott Turow, but this novel succeeds on its own merits.

Engrossing page turner. Some interesting surprises. Will look for other books by this author. ( )

I really enjoyed this, although the only character I could really empathize with was the mother. Honestly for nearly the entire book I wished I could smack the main character, with his willful obtuseness and irritating arrogance. I felt, in his own way, that he's as much a sociopath as any of his progenitors that he's so horrified and ashamed of. I don't feel his steadfast support of his son was really a reflection of his love for him, but more about his own self-image. Likewise, he doesn't seem to have any real feelings for his wife. Whenever he speaks of her, it's all about what she does or has done for him. He's certainly only concerned for her in the most superficial way, although he excuses that to himself as prioritizing his son's needs first.

I had, of course, guessed the surprise twist at the end, fairly early in the book. It would have been hard not to, with all the broad hints. But I couldn't guess the circumstances or how it happened, and the story was compelling enough to keep me reading through to the end. I wanted to find out how it all turned out. It was definitely worth the read.

This was the Audible version, read by Grover Gardner, who did an excellent job as usual. ( )

Andy Barber is an assistant district attorney in Massachusetts. He is respected in the community and is often pulled in when there is a local homicide. However, when a local teenage boy is found murdered in a nearby park and Andy's 14-year-old son Jacob becomes the prime suspect, Andy's perspective must change, and suddenly he finds himself on the defensive side of the courtroom. When Andy's own family history is discovered and released to the public, revealing that his father is in prison for murder, the question of genetics and a possible inherited violent gene comes to light. As doubts to Jacob's innocence surface, Andy is determined to defend Jacob at all costs.

I don't remember hearing a lot of hype about this book when it came out, but I must've read something that influenced my decision to add it to my wishlist way back when, and it's been sitting on my pile for quite some time. Lately I've been consciously reading a lot of books that have had or will have screen adaptations made of them, and though I'm a little late to the party with watching the AppleTV miniseries (which I will begin shortly after writing this review), I figure better late than never. Going in, I knew that one of the big draws of this novel was a plot twist. I'm always up for a good one of those, so I was eager to see if I could figure it out. And I thought I had done so, but I was fooled. This one came wham! bang! right at the end. As far as plot twists it wasn't the best I've read, but it wasn't at all what I expected either, so that made it good. ( )

Here is the dirty little secret: the error rate in criminal verdicts is much higher than anyone imagines. Not just false negatives, the guilty criminals who get off scot-free—those "errors" we recognize and accept. They are the predictable result of stacking the deck in the defendants' favor as we do. The real surprise is the frequency of the false positives, the innocent men found guilty. That error rate we do not acknowledge—do not even think about—because it calls so much into question. The fact is, what we call proof is as fallible as the witnesses who produce it, human beings all. Memories fail, eyewitness identifications are notoriously unreliable, even the best-intentioned cops are subject to failures of judgment and recall. The human element in any system is always prone to error.
A jury verdict is just a guess—a well-intentioned guess, generally, but you simply cannot tell fact from fiction by taking a vote.
