Sent by his father to investigate evidence of a murderous shape shifter, a "skin man," Roland Deschain takes charge of Bill Streeter, a brave but terrified boy who is the sole surviving witness to the beast's most recent slaughter. Roland, himself only a teenager, calms the boy by reciting a story from the Magic Tales of the Eld that his mother used to read to him at bedtime, "The Wind through the Keyhole." A story within a story within a story ...

Everything I've heard has said to read this between Wizard and The Glass and Wolves of the Calla - which is the order I read this. However, a review mentioned reading this after the first 8 books as it provides a nostalgic throwback to the series. I can see that point of view and probably think that is the best order as well as this has book hasn't really provided much to the adventure as far as I can tell ... ( )

Dark tower novel number 4.5, Stephen King doing what he's best at, the protagonists trapped in an isolated building, sheltering from a life-threatening storm (a "starkblast"), telling a story around a fire-place. Another one of Roland's teenage escapades, this time to catch the shapeshifter who has rampaged a town, murdering many. Within this story, Roland befriends a boy "Bill" to whom he tells another story of the boy Tim who sets off from home to find Maerlyn for a cure his mother's blindness, and has many adventures including a dragon, a mutant tribe, Daria (the hand-held guidance service of North Central Positronics, "Battery power is eighty-eight percent. Projected life is seventy years, plus or minus two"), billy-bundlers, a tower, a tiger, and magical objects.
Thoroughly enjoyable quick read. ( )

Much better than I thought it was going to be - I was expecting it to be like Song of Susannah, which I didn't care for as much. It was good to be back in the land of the Dark Tower again. ( )

Loved this book. That's pretty much it.

It's basically a bit like book 4 in the sense that it's mostly Roland telling a story. And then in that story, Roland tells another story.

It gives some closure to book 4, which I'm not yet sure gets addressed in book 5 or not - but either way it was nice.

The story inside of the story is the wind through the keyhole - the story of tim southeart who is the only (first?) gunslinger not to come from the line of Eld.

Really good story, read in only a few days of actual reading. Would read again just for the keyhole portion of the book, the rest is good but not great.

Worth noting that I actually purchased this book and read the physical copy which was the first book in a long time. ( )

This was a great, albeit short, romp through mid-world. Not much of the ka-tet but some good stories from Roland. Very fun read! ( )
