A sci-fi Cinderella story in which Cinderella is a cyborg mechanic trying to help her prince deal with a devastating, incurable plague and the looming threat of a powerful and ruthless queen. Fantastic writing, fantastic world-building! The only thing I didn’t like was the ending; I wish there had been some sort of resolution for at least one of the conflicts, instead of leaving everything loose. That said, I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! ( )

After reading a couple of rather weighty books, I decided to revisit Cinder to try to just have some fun light reading again. I remember enjoying it some years ago.

And yet this time around it felt like a slog. An concept that is more interesting to summarize "cyberpunk android-cinderella who's a mechanic on a plague world" than it is to read. I didn't finish it this time around.

And yet there was a time that I enjoyed it. I think this is because Cinder makes a perfectly fine story, even if it doesn't make a particularly fine book. ( )

My highest rated Marissa Meyer book so far!

I will say it might be because my expectations were a bit low for this. I wasn't really expecting this to be much more than a 3 star read, maybe 3.5 stars because I wasn't a huge fan of her other retelling [b:Heartless|18584855|Heartless|Marissa Meyer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1477740245l/18584855._SY75_.jpg|26322524]. Luckily, this had what I liked about Heartless, and none of what I did not.

It was very good as a reimaging/retelling. It wasn't as subtle as [b:Ella Enchanted|24337|Ella Enchanted (Ella Enchanted #1)|Gail Carson Levine|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1410727190l/24337._SY75_.jpg|2485462] where you almost didn't know it was a Cinderella retelling until later in the book as this book started out with a very clear nod to the original tale. It was really interesting to see how Meyer took the main elements of the tale and twisted them to work wither her cybernetic, futuristic society. It felt very refreshing and original while still paying homage to its predecessor and it did not feel forced or cliched.

I found all the characters to be very fleshed out, even the "evil stepmother" character. None of them were carbon cutouts of their tropes. I could see their perspectives and see their perspectives even if it did not vindicate them of all the awful things they did to Cinder, Beneath it all, you could see that they were hurting.

I also found the Lunar queen to be a very interesting character. She was one of the more flat ones, but it seemed to very intentional. Her whole shtick was that she was the queen and no one disobeyed her. I hope we get to delve more into her as a character and a magical monarch as the story progresses.

I will say that there were a few plot elements here and there that become more obvious as I read the book, but it often wasn't joltingly obvious until a few pages before the nice reveal.

The Plague was also an interesting and unexpected plot point. I loved how it was used in the political side of things. The author was really exploiting all the potential her world had. I have so many questions, especially about the society on the moon. Just so many.

My real only fault with this book was probably that it doesn't have the special something that pushes the book to be my favourite but I can't fault the book for that. This is still a series that I'm very interested in continuing and I don't know why I waited so long to start reading it. ( )

After falling in love with [b:Heartless|18584855|Heartless|Marissa Meyer|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1477740245s/18584855.jpg|26322524], I was really interested in starting the Lunar Chronicles series. Since most of my goodreads friends have given this book a pretty high rating on average, I had quite a high expectation. This book has definitely lived up to it's reputation.

Cinder, the first book of the series, follows the story of a cyborg mechanic set in a future where the fourth world war has been waged and the entire world is constantly under the threat of the ever powerful empress of the Moon, the Lunar Queen Levana. Cinder is the stepdaughter of Adri, whose husband had brought her along with her from a trip in Europe when she was only eleven year old. She doesn't retain any memory from her time before her accident and had to undergo surgery to survive. She is a resident of the New Beijing (capital of the Eastern Commonwealth) which along with the rest of the countries of the world is affected by the fatal disease leutomosis. The royal scientists are looking for an antidote by experimenting on cyborgs. With a charming heir of Commonwealth, Prince Kai, all the girls of Commonwealth are excited to see who he chooses to dance with at the ball. In a world where a cyborg's life is considered lower than human life, Cinder dreams of maybe escaping the torture of her legal guardian. Her life completely turns upside down when she is drafted for leutomosis research by Adri.

My favorite thing about young adult plots is the predictability. Sometimes I get surprised by the twists, but that was not the case with this book. I do like that this book was an extremely easy read; I wouldn't realize how the last 100 pages or the past hour and a half would go by. It is amazing how Marissa Meyer transforms simplistic tales into complex and intricate stories. It brings into perspective the million different possibilities that a single, simple story can have.
