On the one hand, I really like having the collection of references and tips on how to publish available but I could not help having the feeling that, with all the links in the book, an e-book is not the best medium for this, a website or similar would have been more helpfull (and easier to maintain) with this fast changing information. I know about the mail subscription, but that is just a bother in my perception, I want one up-to-date overview in one location. The information given in general is helpfull and contains a lot of tips. However, if I was now in the process of writing my first book, I'm not sure that I would have gone through when I would have had this book. There are so many things to check, do etc that you can easily be set back. The other critique I have of this book is that if focusses almost entirely on fiction and story writing. I'm an author myself but only write non-fiction. There is nothing wrong with focussing on a single topic in the world of publishing, but it could have been clearer in the title and preface to the book. The other critique I have is that the focus is very strong on the US / N. America's. Nothing wrong if you live there, but I'm a European and some of the info is non-info (I'm not interested in formatting for the Nook, Kobo or even the Kindle as they are niche products out here; my focus is the Bebook, Sony and the like which have different requirements). So my advice: use this book if you are living in North America and are already in the final stages of writing a fiction book. If you do not fit the profile, wait, move houses or change genre or simply browse through it for some tips... Aquesta ressenya s'ha escrit per al programa Donatius de membres de LibraryThing. I was disappointed and frustrated with this book. It contains a large amount of information - and it's likely I will go back to it to refer to - about the making of E-books. The main frustration was that a huge chunk of the book consisted of web-sites. I was reading on Kindle and looking up web-sites is almost useless on Kindle. It may be OK if you are looking for one piece of information, but impossible to navigate and explore. Hyperlinks were provided, but it would have been much more useful to have spelled out the URL: then at least, I could have had my laptop open next my Kindle and checked out the sites. There were many lists of ideas and resources, but these were not shaped into a bigger picture. I am reader who needs to begin with that bigger picture; other readers may enjoy the hunt and peck immersion in bites of information. While the information contained in the book is all fine, I would recommend anyone serious about writing an E-book either to consult the many good books on writing, or to go straight to a formatting guide like Smashwords. Aquesta ressenya s'ha escrit per al programa Donatius de membres de LibraryThing. I am a newcomer to the world of ebooks. I found this book to be a wealth of information. It is organized in a step by step fashion through the different aspects of the ebook publishing industry. It is presented in somewhat of a checklist fashion with numerous links to websites and other resources that can be of help in ebook publishing. According to the author, "There, I just emptied my brain and computer into this ebook."I read the book once straight through. Now I will re-read it at my computer, bookmarking resources as I go. I was concerned that the book may quickly become dated because of all the links. However, that concern is addressed by the author. She provides a link to join a mailing list. She plans on sending out updates twice a year. Thank you for gathering your research and lessons learned in one place! *** Reviewed for member giveaway *** Aquesta ressenya s'ha escrit per al programa Donatius de membres de LibraryThing. I am not a writer, but I like to read about how a ebook can be publish. The links to other free or low cost books can found on the web. I enjoy the learning about all problems in getting your master piece on line to sell copies. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

While the book does not tell a writer how to actually *write* a book (that, the author says, is best accomplished by practice and hard work), the DIY Guide does explain how to publish and promote an indie book.
The advice offered in this book is comprehensive, covering topics from how to format a book for Smashwords to the best uses of an author's blog. It also contains so many links that a reader may find herself overloaded with information. But for anyone starting out in the writing industry, this book would be very helpful.
The problem is that the book itself is very confusing. The formatting (at least in the Kindle version) makes subheadings from headings blend together. Also, the overall organization is a bit strange. (For example, advice on how to use FaceBook and Twitter is placed between the sections on how to create a book cover and how to format text.)
I would recommend looking at this book on a computer as opposed to attempting to sit down and read it cover-to-cover on a Kindle or Nook. I think the document would both be easier to read and easier to navigate.
So here's the upshot: "The (almost) complete DIY Guide" is full of wonderful information for a newly-minted writer; however, finding all of that information may be a challenge. ( )
