It explains things that can happen in that amount of time. For instance, the book talks about how a cheetah can immediately start sprinting in one second or an adult's heart can beat about 70 times. This books talks about what can happen in a second, in a minute, in a hour, and in a very very long time. It gives us an insight to how much happens every single second around the world. An informational text using Steve Jenkin's ingenious collage work to complement the factual information. "A second goes by pretty quickly. In fact, several have passed since you started reading this sentence. And they just keep going by. There are 60 seconds in every minute, 3,600 in every hour, and on and on. Most people reading this book will experience more than 2 1⁄2 billion seconds in their lifetime. But a lot can happen in a second. Some surprising — even amazing — things can take place in a very short time. Other events unfold more slowly …And that's what this book is about." - Steve Jenkins Teaching Connections: informational research projects, nonfiction text features Website Resources: http://www.stevejenkinsbooks.com More of an informational book. Shows what happens in a second, a minute, and hour, a day, and so on. Interesting for talking about time, but only reading parts at a time, or for students to read on their own; probably not a good read aloud book if you want to maintain interest. Drawings are interesting and semirealistic. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
"This non-fiction picture book explores time and how we think about it in a different way - as a series of events in the natural world (some of them directly observable, others not) that take place in a given unit of time. Steve Jenkins' extraordinary illustrations will accompany this engaging look at time. Just a Second is visualized as a linear series of illustrations and captions, starting with a second, a minute, an hour, a month, and a year. What happens in a second? A gnat beats its wings 1000 times. A hummingbird beats its wings 75 times. A shrew's heart beats 13 times. A bat squeaks and listens for an echo 10 times. A dropped stone falls 16 feet. Earth travels 18 miles in its trip around the sun. A cheetah can run 100 feet"-- No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |

Thoughts: I really liked all of the books I picked. but I really liked this book because it had a plethora of information and helped students discover new things without being overwhelmed by reading. I also really liked this book because it didn't not require lots of reading and students could explore many facts at once.
