Things are starting to look up for October "Toby" Daye. She's training her squire, doing her job, and has finally allowed herself to grow closer to the local King of Cats. It seems like her life may finally be settling down...at least until dead changelings start appearing in the alleys of San Francisco, killed by an overdose of goblin fruit.Toby's efforts to take the problem to the Queen of the Mists are met with harsh reprisals, leaving her under sentence of exile from her home and everyone she loves. Now Toby must find a way to reverse the Queens decree, get the goblin fruit off the streets--and, oh, yes, save her own life, since more than a few of her problems have once again followed her home. And then there's the question of the Queen herself, who seems increasingly unlikely to have a valid claim to the throne...To find the answers, October and her friends will have to travel from the legendary Library of Stars into the hidden depths of the Kingdom of the Mists--and they'll have to do it fast, because time is running out. In faerie, some fates are worse than death.October Daye is about to find out what they are.… (més)

This is the review that was merged from "Never Shines the Sun"
Here never shines the sun; here nothing breeds...

All I wanted to do was meet her. I wouldn't introduce myself, I wouldn't interfere, I'd just...
I'd just meet her. That would be enough.

Wow. That threw things into sharp focus, didn't it? There are so many quotes here I want to pull, but the story is all of nine pages long and there's nothing I can pull out without spoiling it.

Let me back up a bit here.

I was examining the author's website not too long ago when I realized there was an October Daye story besides "Rat Catcher" that is only available in print. This one. If you want to read this little gem, you'll have to track down the print edition of [b:Chimes at Midnight|10184403|Chimes at Midnight (October Daye, #7)|Seanan McGuire|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1363206331s/10184403.jpg|15083431]. It's not available any other way.

If you are following this series, do it. It is deep story background that is amazing in light of all we now know from the series. Plus one of our only up close looks at Amandine to date. And I always love it when our narrator takes the stage.

As to placement, this story is essentially 7.1 in the series, having been published with book seven, but I am not at all sorry I read it after I read book nine, [b:A Red-Rose Chain|15748535|A Red-Rose Chain (October Daye, #9)|Seanan McGuire|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1469593206s/15748535.jpg|21440964]. Book eight ([b:The Winter Long|15748529|The Winter Long (October Daye, #8)|Seanan McGuire|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1397500522s/15748529.jpg|21440957]) is directly on point for the matters discussed in these scant nine pages, but the implications are really starting to fold out in A Red-Rose Chain. So I liked it as 9.1. (I should note that, chronologically, this story takes place prior to the first book in the series, but it contains spoilers for the novels.)

If you've never read this series, unfortunately none of the short stories are a good starting place. They don't make sense without the background of the novels. Start with [b:Rosemary and Rue|6294549|Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1)|Seanan McGuire|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1406866868s/6294549.jpg|6478937]. If you're reading the series and have never read the short stories, three are available for free from the author at http://www.seananmcguire.com/tobyshorts.php, along with where you can find the other four (as of this writing). And those of you who are sick of seeing this spiel pop up in your feed, rejoice! I only have one story left to find and I will be all caught up with my October Daye reading! Yay!

**I am double posting this review to Chimes at Midnight in case Goodreads decides to delete this title since it has never been separately published.** [Update 11/24/15: Yup, got merged.]

**1/15/16: And, now it's back. I have confirmed over in the librarians group that it has been discovered that this was briefly available as its very own ebook, so now it gets to stay. Love it when that happens. Also, if anyone is keeping track, there are now four free Toby shorts available at McGuire's site, and there will be a new, separately published short available in August 2016.

**1/23/19: And merged again at some point. I really hate Goodreads sometimes. ( )

Huh. OK, I can get with this, but some things somehow felt slightly off. Maybe I shouldn't read with a migraine. ( )

I love the Luidaeg and enjoyed this story, but am limiting myself to three stars rather than my knee-jerk inclination toward four because it wasn't really a story. It was a couple of scenes from another character's point of view from a time prior to the point that Toby makes a suitable narrator. She's a child, and what's more, she's hardly present--she can't give us the information.

So overall, I enjoyed "Never Shines the Sun" and would *love* to see more, but it's more like two deleted scenes than a story with a beginning, middle, and end. ( )

Goblin fruit is a pleasant drug for the fae, if they are pureblood that is. Changelings only need to taste it once and they are addicted. It always kills them in the end. And for humans it is pretty much instantly fatal. So Toby is not pleased to discover it on the streets of San Francisco. And she is even more upset when she learns that it has caused the death of many changelings in the city. No one knew because no one really cared.

But Toby is determined to stop the traffic. So she goes to the Queen. Who really doesn’t care. After all who cares about changelings, the Queen of the Mists certainly doesn’t, but it does give her an excuse to have Toby exiled.

I do love this series of book. The more I read them the more I love them. I think this is my favourite so far. And I’m so glad that I have book 8 on its way to me. Only problem is that then I’ll be all caught up and left waiting for McGuire to write another. Still she has other books and other series for me to try.

I think I’ve said pretty much the same thing about each of the October Daye novels when I review them. If you’ve read and enjoyed the first, then you’ll enjoy this. If you haven’t start with book one. Even if you don’t think you enjoy urban fantasy give this series a go, because it is about as far from the Anita Blake books as it gets, yet they seem to be what everyone thinks of when you mention urban fantasy.

Toby has come such long way from back then. She has learned so much and developed so much. And the whole world around her has developed as well, not only do we have Sylvester’s lands but the Undersea world, Goldengreen gets more time, and now the Muir Woods. It is really nice to be able to see the world develop and grow as we get more and more information about the wider world.

My copy also included a short story, Never SHines the Sun, which adds to the whole October has big fish to fry. It is also a nice look at the Luideag. Since we met her she’s been this “big power”, and she still is in the short story, but there is slightly more feelings on view than when she plays her role for October. Of course the Luideag herself has really grown as a character since her introduction. Its obvious that there is another thread of a story winding its way through all these novels, and we’ll probably only get to see it pay off in the final book. Lets hope that’s not for quite a while yet. ( )

Toby continues to solve the whodunnits with a maximum of danger to herself, but hey, maybe she is learning a little bit. ( )
