More of a short comment than a review: when people commit suicide, it's generally assumed that they must have been "very depressed." This book suggests alternative reasons to choose suicide that I had not considered. ( ![]() Thoroughly enjoyed this book - good page-turner. At some points Louisa was irritatingly optimistic and naive but she had to be for the story. This is somewhere between two and three stars. I didn't want to put it down when I was reading it, but at the same time, it's the kind of book where you know it can only end a certain way. I understand the appeal of the story, but it does make me think about what happens to people who can't afford a live-in companion, top of the line medical equipment, or basically anyone without inherent wealth and a supportive family. What would happen if the protagonist of this novel wasn't an attractive, well-off, white male? Maybe I've spent too much time on Tumblr. For a more nitty-gritty look at a novel shaped by health issues and end-of-life decisions, I recommend Lionel Shriver's "So Much for That." WOW!! Loved it! Made me tear up--not an easy thing to do, but the best part was the author didn't play the Disney card by making me watch it all so they could rip my heart out and stomp on it. I appreciated the mercy.
It’s a curious phenomenon that in this digital age — in which thoughts that once emerged quietly and gradually on paper have been overtaken by instantaneous visual and audio impressions that are swiftly taken in without really being absorbed — the rapt viewer sometimes needs to be jarred, slowed down and forced to look inward. In “Me Before You,” circumstances lead noncontemplative people to contemplation...Moyes’s heroine, if Lou can be so styled, may not be heroic; her male counterpart may be nobody’s idea of a leading man — and yet with Lou and Will she has created an affair to remember. "They had nothing in common until love gave them everything to lose Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life--steady boyfriend, close family--who has never been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex-Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after a motorcycle accident. Will has always lived a huge life--big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel--and now he's pretty sure he cannot live the way he is. Will is acerbic, moody, bossy--but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living. A Love Story for this generation, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn't have less in common--a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?
