Cooch is a special-operations, national security thriller. The protagonist, Alejandro Mohammed Cuchulain, called Cooch or Alex, became a Marine at sixteen and a CIA special-operations trainee at 17. His father is a wheel-chair bound former marine and Medal of Honor winner who gives Alex advice as to how to survive in a violent world. His mother is the daughter of a Bedouin sheikh who sends a young Alex off during many of his summer breaks, to experience the Bedouin life. The combination of a very young start in learning the art and craft of violence, combined with a thirst for knowledge combine to help him to become both a noted designer and user of explosives and an expert in Islamic affairs. These experiences blend into a fast-paced thriller that moves from the CIA to south Asia to the Middle East, to Wall Street and back again, as Cooch matures. Violent, yet thoughtful, Cooch represents the best in fast-moving, popular thrillers.… (més)

Finally a book that lives up to the hype :) If you are a fan of Tom Clancy (I am personally a long time fan of all of his books) then you will love this guy too.. For a first book it's an awesome story - well written, lots of action, great plots and I already love this new character called "Cooch". ( )

Excellent! Interesting characters, well fleshed out so you could understand what made them tick. Alex's father, now disabled, is a war hero, and Alex's mother has Beduoin ancestry - an interesting mixture. Alex is clearly very bright, but not really achieving as expected, and showing all the signs of going off the rails to a bad future. As the story unfolds Alex's terrible past experiences understandably affect his later decision making and behaviour. This was fast paced and exciting, and in some respects worryingly in line with some of today's global concerns.

I will definitely want to read future books by Robert Cook. Highly recommended. ( )

2.0 out of 5 stars Be careful...
As a fan of Lee Child, Vince Flynn, Barry Eisler, and so on, this book was recommended. Alas, I must be the only one not to find it enjoyable. I appreciate what the author was attempting, but...
For me, the dialogue seemed stilted and it seemed as though each point was made through repetition. I could not engage and finally gave up in the middle of the fourth...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great New Addition to High Tech Thrillers, August 4, 2010

This book was recommended to me by a friend who also loves Thrillers. It does not disappoint! I found the title character, Cooch to be an interesting blend of Mitch Rapp (Vince Flynn) and Lucas Davenport (John Sandford's Prey series). He gets difficult assignments protecting the US against terrorism, but he also has a broad educational background and approaches problems thoughtfully. As this is the first in what I hope will become a series, there is a lot of character development - but a lot of it happens on the fly so the action never comes to a halt. Cook has introduced several supporting characters that are quite believable and play a major role in advancing the story line, rather than just drift off into a dead end. There is plenty of high technology in the weapons and communications, but it is pretty believable rather than just invented to get the characters out of a difficult situation.

Cook shows us some very interesting insights into the terrorism problem and introduces some story lines that show the promise of exploring some new approaches to addressing this issue.

This is a very fast paced adventure with well-developed characters with whom I was able to identify. It was hard to put this book down. I really hope that the author has many more story lines waiting to become sequels to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Thriller, September 17, 2010

This review is from: Cooch (Paperback)
Cooch is a great thriller, written by a big philanthropist, at least in Pennsylvania Higher Education ([...]).

I have to admit, I was prompted to read this book because Bob Cook donates a bundle of money to Indiana University of Pennsylvania and to the Cook Honors College.
Cooch has a national-security, special-ops kind of plot. As mention in the other posts, the characters are fun, smart, and realistic with believable backgrounds. The book has very well detailed descriptions of people and locations. It is very easy to follow and can be read in two quick afternoons. I read many books, so a fresh character with a good storyline is always welcome. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a thrilling read. Can't wait for the sequel!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cooch, September 13, 2010

Something fresh here. A new action hero, and supporting characters that you want to come back and spend more time with. My favorite thrillers have non-fictional substance, real time glue, and not just a workable plot and quick dialogue. Cooch is obviously written by an insider who knows more about transnational terrorism and its realtionship to goverments and big business than most writers of his genre. That and chacaters with nauance, and the pages turn.

5.0 out of 5 stars National Security Mystery Thriller, November 23, 2010
By
Stephen M (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cooch (Paperback)
I usually stick to reading history, but received a copy of Cooch and knowing the author decided to try a few pages. That's all it took. My interest in national security and terrorism was peaked, and the plot is extremely believable. The author's business and military background, combined with his extensive travel, makes him an insider when it comes to international security issues. The people in the book are intelligent and are all fascinating characters. The sites, such as restaurants and hotels, are real and familiar. It's like you are there. The details, events, and world situations are right from the front page of today's newspapers. I have a short attention span, so the accelerated pace of this plot kept me glued. Just read the first page or two. Cooch is a guy I'd like to see in a movie. There is a considerable variety of action and intelligence here, perfect for a film. The book is easy to read and follow, but the plot is serious and involved. You need to read it.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cooch (Paperback)
This is the perfect beach book, and where I read it. The subject, an elite group of the CIA, do their job on a highly sanitary basis.
The story line has your attention from page one. Love the main character Cooch,a mans man. There is more to the author Bob Cook than meets the eye. This book involves a great deal of first hand experience to be able approach this kind of subject matter. A thriller with landmarks that make it personal. If you like Childs or Baldacci then add Cook to that list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Fast-Paced Action!, November 18, 2010
By

This review is from: Cooch (Paperback)
Cooch is a great addition to my collection of government action thrillers. The characters are well developed and Cooch himself is a likeable, intelligent hero with a unique and colorful background. The book is incredibly detailed, (clearly written by someone with inside information and good connections), but it doesn't bore you with long narratives that are characteristic of similar spy novels. The chapters are short which allow for quick, segmented reading, but the story will hook you and it isn't likely to be put down for long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Award-wining Cooch, October 31, 2010
By

This review is from: Cooch (Paperback)
I enjoy a fast paced action thriller and Cooch delivers. Cooch is a very educated, physically strong, highly trained special-ops hero. Bob Cook provides details and nuances that give Cooch and the supporting characters credibility. This is the kind of read that makes you wonder who will play Cooch in the movie. If Vin Diesel got a PHD or Matt Damon plumbed iron for 6-months, they could qualify.

This review is from: Cooch (Paperback)
Cooch is a refreshing new look at a smart, calculating, good looking, and, yes - deadly hero who defends the United States against any and all bad guys. And he does it before they know what hit them! Cooch and his band of equally interesting characters make my fictional world a better place to live! Lots of action and lots of fun! I enjoyed getting to know him from his youth to his "present". I had trouble putting it down - best thing to read on an airplane ride or a quiet weekend - wherever you find yourself with some time! Looking forward to the next in the series!

4.0 out of 5 stars PRINCIPLED HERO, September 7, 2010
By
psck - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cooch (Paperback)
Cooch,Alex Cuchulain, tackles a complex transnational terrorist plot while wooing one of the most likable but foul-mouthed female characters in any recent spy novel. As his secret life unfolds we find a man asked to preform uncivilized behaviors for his country, barely holding on to his sanity. It is a novel about drug wars, violence, sex, loyalty and risk. A perfect pitch beach read, modern and unfortunately believable.Waiting to read what he does next, and does he get the girl.
