This is such a beautiful book! The story is about a young girl named Marisol McDonald who does not like to match and is so unique. She is a bilingual girl who has biracial parents. She has a wide imagination and likes to wear green polka dots with purple and yellow striped tights. I also really like how this book includes a Spanish translation on every other page as well as an English translation. This would be an amazing book to use for EL students to help them when learning English. I can't wait to have this book in my classroom! It would be great for intermediate students. ( )

Marisol McDonald doesn't match ("Me llamo Marisol McDonald y no combino"). At least, that's what everyone tells her. She has brown skin but red hair, wears mismatched clothing, eats PB&J burritos, and combines English and Spanish, print and cursive. Marisol is happy with herself the way she is, but when a classmate challenges her ("you couldn't match if you wanted to!") she tries...but the glum expression on her face shows that, while it might please other people, it doesn't make her feel good. Fortunately, a teacher writes her a kind note ("I like you just the way you are") and Marisol's confidence and joy is restored. When she goes with her family to the pound to pick out a puppy, she finds a perfectly mismatched one.

Peruvian-Scottish-American Marisol reminds me a bit of Clementine: she is uniquely herself, and perfect that way.

Bilingual text is in English and Spanish; read either or both. ( )

This book is about a girl named Marisol, she has many outward appearances that lots of people find interesting because it doesn't make "sense". This story tells the importance of just accepting yourself for who you are and that if you try to please everyone, it will not make you happy or make things "better". I like this book and would use it in the class to show the importance of self acceptance and to treat others with respect and kindness no matter who they are. ( )

This sweet children's book opens up on a young girl who feels like she does not match. She is Peruvian, Scottish and American. She notices her bright hair looks different with her darker skin. She rather be playing by herself rather than with others. At school she faces some teasing for the way she looks. Her teacher reminds her that she is perfectly mismatched. She is who she is meant to be.
This is a sweet book that would be great to read to younger elementary students. It is a great reminder to kids that they may look different but they should be proud and know they are created with beauty.

Primary. Marisol is Peruvian, Scottish and American. She has red hair and dark skin, she speaks Spanish, English, and sometimes both! Everyone tells her that she doesn't seem to fit in, but she likes herself just the way she is! Nice to have in the classroom.
