Una distòpia, situada en futur molt proper on la major part del món està dirigit per grans empreses. No hi ha impostos, el Govern és pràcticament inexistent (de fet, és gairebé una empresa per si mateix) i la gent té per cognom el nom de l'empresa on treballa. La Policia és també una empresa privada a qui pots subcontractar assassinats sense gaire problemes, mentre agents del Govern, com la Jennifer, persegueixen els delinqüents si la víctima del delicte pot finançar-ne el pressupost.
La wikipedia diu que alguns lectors consideren que té una intenció satírica semblant al 1984 de George Orwell, però en un món amb massa poc poder polític en comptes de massa. La veritat és que la novel·la és genial, però jo l'he trobat amb molt menys contingut polític que la d'Orwell. Diria més aviat que té més semblança (sense passar-se, tampoc) amb les últimes de William Gibson (Pattern Recognition, Spook Country i Zero History). En tot cas us la recomano, enganxa molt i es llegeix d'una revolada. ( )
