2022 review: My third or fourth reading of this book, I believe. Unfortunately, it was just middle-of-the road for me this time, probably due to the fact that my attitudes to religion, monarchy, and fiction have changed so much over the last decade. Not a bad story, but I don't see it as great anymore either. ( )

This is the first book where I chronicled my thoughts as I read through it with my son. I don't know how easy it is for y'all to access the record of those here on Goodreads, but if you're looking for a detailed account of my thoughts on the book, you can look there. I'll say this. I've read a lot of books to my little boy these last couple years, and I can honestly say that This book is among the best. Good, tight writing, good description. Good action. Also there's not a lot of dead space or trashy empty dialogue that just seems to be there to take up space. (That's become a particular peeve lately. And when you're reading a book aloud, it becomes really obvious.) The British slang will be a stumbling block to some. But it's not too bad. And there were a few slight pieces of sexism that I ignored, skipped over, or re-worded on the fly. But honestly, this book was written 60 years ago, and you need to cut it a little slack because of that. And in my opinion, it only needs a little slack. Truth be told, I've read books written this year that have ten times the sexism this one does. Also, I'd like to make it clear that this is the FIRST book of the Narnia Chronicles. This is where you start the series. I'm sorry if you read them in the wrong order, but if you did, it's better than you admit it now, come to grips, and move on with your life knowing the truth.

I can still remember how enthralled I've been when first watching The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the 2005 film version. Back then, I was a young boy easily enchanted by stories of strong fantasy creatures divided into good and evil, and that's basically the target audience this book has been written for. After watching the movie, I immediately went to my primary school's library and borrowed "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe". While I rewatched the movie several times afterwards, I never returned to the novel itself and didn't remember quite much about it until today. To be honest, I didn't even notice the existence of six sequels, although I remember having watched at least some parts of "Prince Caspian", the second part of the movie trilogy. This afternoon, I came across a copy of this first volume of the "Chronicles of Narnia", and decided to reread it in order to prepare for reading the six other books. I've heard they are pretty easy to read and, in addition, not too long, so it should be a bearable decision for my reading habits.

As to "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", the novel can be considered to be a classic depiction of characters divided into good and evil for the sake of its younger readers. I don't know why that's even the case - I do not in the least appreciate one-dimensional villains and/or good characters to root for. In fact, C.S. Lewis made it pretty easy to decide from early on which characters are the ones to be loved and which are the ones to be hated by his readers. But neither Aslan nor the White Witch - both of them can be considered to be the two huge forces of this novel - were characters in their own right; they were stereotypes, the noble king with the generous heart, and the evil, manipulating witch with her deadly abilities. Nobody else was allowed to have any kind of motivation for his/her deeds (apart from Edmund, perhaps), their single justification for being existent in the story was Lewis' need for characters to support either the good or the evil ones.

Yet, apart from these factors, I still enjoyed the story. Lewis managed to create a magnificient fantasy world, and I easily remember how much I admired the world-building and the entire story as a child. C.S. Lewis created a world of magic, and for every child who is interested in magical fantasy worlds and literary children escaping into unknown, foreign countries, this is a novel to be recommended. ( )

There was a lot that I had forgotten in this book, which I first read many years ago. The reading of the audiobook by Michael York was interesting, as he made everything seem wonderous and magical. Not sure I was fully on board with that interpretation, however, I enjoyed the story and will continue the adventure of revisiting this well-loved series. ( )

When I began reading the story, it seemed well written but the fairy-tale atmosphere was curiously cut-and-dried... Two of my daughters re-educated me. I made the mistake of reading them the first chapter, and since then it has been two chapter a night, sometimes followed by tears when a third chapter is not forthcoming.

To Lucy Barfield
My Dear Lucy,
I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realized that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. You can then take it down from some upper shelf, dust it, and tell me what you think of it. I shall probably be too deaf to hear, and too old to understand a word you say, but I shall still be
your affectionate Godfather,
C. S. Lewis

"It means," said Aslan, "that though the witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still, which she did not know. Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of time. But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation. She would have known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backwards."
"How stupid of me! But I've never seen a Son of Adam or a Daughter of Eve before. I am delighted..."
