I actually really enjoyed [b:The Horse and His Boy|84119|The Horse and His Boy (Chronicles of Narnia, #5)|C.S. Lewis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388210968l/84119._SX50_.jpg|3294501]. It's the first book with a completely new main character. None of either the four original children or their cousin Eustace take up a main role. Although they do show up, it's in a more minor capacity. A nice way to shake things up.

Timelinewise, it takes place after most of [b:The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe|100915|The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia, #1)|C.S. Lewis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1353029077l/100915._SY75_.jpg|4790821], but before the end when the children have grown and return to their own world. So Narnia is at peace, but it's a new peace. So when we get to follow an outside threat (we hadn't otherwise heard of) from countries that have been mentioned but only barely... that's pretty cool.

Another pretty interesting note is how two of the main characters are Talking Horses. We've had Reepicheep before and all manner of minor Talking Beasts (and Aslan) as minor characters, but this is another new bit. But having actual 'beastlike' characterization different based on species is a neat trick. It's one reason I was reading [b:Redwall|7996|Redwall (Redwall, #1)|Brian Jacques|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327877368l/7996._SY75_.jpg|486980].

Overall and plotwise, it's a solid adventure story with a fairly straight forward plot and a number of neat locations and characters we meet along the way. The bad guys are obviously bad and the good guys win the day, but that's to be expected from these stories, no?

Well worth the read. Now I'm curious how [b:The Magician's Nephew|65605|The Magician's Nephew (Chronicles of Narnia, #6)|C.S. Lewis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1308814770l/65605._SY75_.jpg|1031537] (chronologically the earliest of the stories) will fit in. ( )

If the first two books are probably my favorites in this series, this one might be my least favorite. Beyond how uncomfortably racist it feels, it’s also pretty boring. There’s way too much of characters standing around and discussing their plans or describing/watching what other people are doing. I like getting this peek into the royal reign of the four Pevensie kids but it also drives home how they had this long, full life in Narnia that got obliterated when they went back through the wardrobe. Still very unsettling. ( )

Imagine my horror when I read this once familiar story in e-book form, and stopped reading when Aslan was saying 'myself' to poor Shasta. The problem of evil has never been more apparent in any book.

C.S. Lewis has always been disingenuous about his Narnia books, imparting the sugar coated dishonesties about the Creation of Narnia, implying in other books that the worst should fall on Aslan's tawny shoulders.

Forget about all of the previous grievances. Forget the implied racism. This book is boring. Every talking character is. More rubbish being spouted each page. By the way, I do think, unlike Lewis, that Cor is a far worse name than Shasta. ( )

The Boy tells me this is his favorite of the series, but acknowledges he may change his mind after we finish the next one. I love the good doctrine entwined in this text, and always find new treasures, no matter how many times I read them. ( )

In the opinion of this admirer, "The Horse and His Boy" is relatively unispired. It does not glow as much as the incomparable first book of the series, "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." It has not as much gay satire and plain excitement as several of the others. Just possibly the Narnian fields are suffering from overcropping, and could stand lying fallow while other fields are put back into cultivation.
