No hi ha cap discussió a Converses sobre aquesta obra. Two and a half stars. These were guilty pleasures I had no intention of rereading, and my reviews would have been harsh. I'm enjoying and learning a lot from the current das_sporking ( ![]() I really enjoyed The Selection. While I can find America annoying at times, overall I think the storyline is great and the dystopian world is good. Now I get why students burn through this series. I’m glad I waited so I can binge the whole series before the movie comes out. i think this could have been good but when it veered into fantasy I lost any desire to continue the audiobook. I guess I’m about as far from the target audience for this book as it’s possible to get, so take my comments with that in mind and don’t let me put you off if you love the sound of it. ‘The Selection’ is a YA dystopian SF romance that’s something like a cross between ‘The Hunger Games’ and the TV show ‘The Bachelor’. In a distant future after modern society has been destroyed and rebuilt, young women compete in a reality TV show to win the hand in marriage of the prince of their country. As premises go, that’s not bad, but unfortunately the author’s wit and imagination stops there and everything else that happens in the story is crushingly routine and obvious. The heroine (called, insanely, America Singer) is torn between the handsome, powerful but mysterious prince and the comfortable boy next door, the society has a rigid number based caste system but aside from that we don’t learn much about it and it feels little different from our own (despite the World Wars that happened between now and then). As science fiction, then, it’s pretty lazy with no real world building to speak of, and a back story that feels like it comes from a bad 80s technothriller (something about China invading America). That leaves the romance, but it failed for me there too as there’s no real romantic tension, largely because I never came to care for any of the characters. All in all then a miss for me, although I know that many love the books, so maybe I’m just being a grumpy old man. Contingut a
"Sixteen-year-old America Singer is living in the caste-divided nation of Illéa, which formed after the war that destroyed the United States. America is chosen to compete in the Selection--a contest to see which girl can win the heart of Illéa's prince--but all she really wants is a chance for a future with her secret love, Aspen, who is a caste below her"-- No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
