The second volume is just as adorable and fun as the first volume, although with more Sailor Moon stuff - especially the final chapter. Plus, Minako gets her own Tuxedo Kamen although it doesn't go the same route as Usagi and Mamoru. It also sets up Minako's dream of becoming a music idol. The only thing that irks me is that the series never reveals the source of the voice that gives Minako her orders. Is it Luna? Serenity? I'm not sure. Still, it all ends up being a goofy, colorful, lighthearted prequel to the main Sailor Moon series and a must-read for Minako Aino (and Artemis!) fans. How has no one made a Codename wa Sailor V anime yet? ( )

So after having finished all 200 episodes and 3 movies of the classic Sailor Moon (fuck me) I’m back to consuming the manga, casting desperately about for good fanfics, and debating whether or not to delve into Crystal. This review addresses the first of those obsessive outlets. The second (and final) volume of Codename: Sailor V does the franchise’s usual thing of mixing lighthearted monster-of-the-week comedy with out-of-left-field plays for the feels, neatly setting the stage for Sailor Moon proper.

(some spoilers for Codename: Sailor V and Sailor Moon below)

And far more so than the first volume of V, the second half of the manga really is preparing for the rest of the franchise. Minako goes through her own version of the Sailor Senshi awakening, restoring the memories of her life as the Princess of Venus, the fall of the Moon Kingdom, and her destiny as a guardian of Princess Serenity. The final chapters set Minako on a course to rediscover the Princess and her fellow guardians, ending her career as a lone vigilante.

Thankfully, though, most of the story is light-hearted fun. I was pleasantly surprised to find a blood donation plot lovably reminiscent of one of the funniest episodes in the anime, and the use of Phantom Ace as a trial run of sorts for the Tuxedo Mask/Endymion narrative worked great. Minako as slightly-higher-functioning-Usagi remains lovably insolent, and continues to flesh out her personality and her teenage levels of maturity.

There are a few things that either aren’t fully explored or wrapped up, leaving the reader with a permanent sense of incompleteness. The identity of Minako’s “Boss” is never properly revealed, which is vaguely flummoxing, given that they’d actually have to be fairly important, plot-wise, to know what was going up with V, Artemis, and the Senshi. Natsuna Sakurada, who knows of Minako’s identity as V and attempts to recruit her into the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, is similarly Put on a Bus. And while Minako’s personality stays largely unchanged between the manga and the anime, I really wish the anime hadn’t dropped her habit of oddly-specific citations during her “In the Name of the Moon” speeches.

I really liked this look into Sailor Venus before she was teamed with Sailor Moon and the rest of the Sailor Guardians. It shows how much she had matured before she met the others. I'm glad that I decided to read these and not just skip over them because I like Sailor Moon so much. Great series...even if it only is 2 books. :-) ( )

This is the awesome sequel to Sailor V volume 1. In this volume Minako keeps you laughing as she falls in and out of love and tries to warm up to being the chosen Sailor Venus. ( )
