Quick reread for a summer reading program. I had forgotten about all the tough topics touched on in this book: poverty, child neglect, slavery, political and religious freedom, mob mentality, feminism etc.

At the same time, this book does a fabulous job at helping you see the past. By which I mean, you understand how they may have reached some of their conclusions. You have, to borrow that phrase, stepped into the foreign country of the past and seen why they do things differently with the knowledge, skills, and abilities presented to them.

In my mind, the past is represented by stolid Uncle Matthew and the future by Kit. Both, at the end, have learned respect for the other.

And who doesn't love curmudgeonly Uncle Matthew at the end of it? ( )

It’s the 17th century. Katherine (Kit) is from the Caribbean and is now an orphan, so she manages to find passage on a ship to Connecticut, where she has an aunt. Her aunt and uncle (and cousins) take her in, but she has a hard time adjusting to the culture, and to the amount of work she is expected to help with (she is used to having slaves to do the work). She befriends the local elderly woman who lives alone, Hannah. Hannah is a Quaker, and is also considered a witch by the locals and Kit is asked not to visit Hannah, anymore.

I listened to the audio, and mostly I liked it, but it was hard to keep focus, unfortunately. I liked it enough that I often rewound to listen again to try to catch what I’d missed, but I still missed more than I would have liked. ( )

Kit, a 16 year old girl in New England (Puritans) is accused of witchcraft. Her life has been upturned as she left a more privileged life with her uncle in Barbados and ends up being shipped off to New England. At this time it is very poor, hard working, dirt floors, highly religious and very strict way of living which is in contrast to how she has always lived. You follow her struggle to have her life completely changed and to be thrown into a culture that does not make any sense to her. The characters are well developed and you emphasize with Kits attempt to fit in, prove she can belong, but watch her fail miserably. You watch her try to make friends and fit in with her family, adapt to the harsh world of the Puritan society and readers can understand what the New World was like 300 years ago. ( )

Set in the 17th century in the United States, this novel features a teenage girl who travels from Barbados - where she has been brought up by an indulgent and wealthy grandfather - to live with her aunt and family, after losing her grandfather and his estate. Her new relatives are strict Puritans and there are many clashes.

I borrowed the book from friends and it took a few pages to get into the story, but once I did I was hooked. The style is engaging, the main characters three dimensional, and the background is one I knew very little about. I found some of the attitudes quite shocking.

There's a very low key romance - more than one, actually - and lots of drama in this very well written book. Intended for older children and teens, but I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to know a little more about this period in American history.

This is one of my favorite books by far that I read in middle school. This book takes place back during the Puritan age in Colonial Connecticut. The main character is Kit Tyler who is 16 years old and just lost her grandfather in Barbados so she has moved in with her aunt’s family. Throughout the book, Kit struggles with fitting in because she knows how to read and write unlike other girls. Kit discovers a Quaker named Hannah who the Puritans despise because of her beliefs. Numerous people try to condemn Kit of being a witch and she goes to court because of it. During the whole book, Kit also has a love interest, Nat, who sweeps her off her feet, Because he is the sailors son, Kit only gets to see him every so often. But you will not be disappointed.it’s such a great book! ( )
