This collection of short stories by first-time, struggling, academics trying something else and doubtful writers was published by the Honno press under the auspices of the Chawton House Library. Each story was inspired by Jane Austen's heroes and villains and the way each writer has taken a character, a situation or plot is fascinating and entertaining and there is not one story that fails within this collection.
Of course there are highlights and they range from the hilarious to the haunting. 'Henry Tilney Attempts to Cure his Wife' is a delightfully funny story taking Catherine Morland's reading as far as 'Jane Eyre'. There are also inspirations from current conflicts and its servicemen, rivalry in a children's home, a touching wartime love story, a tragic 'Jane Austen, 1945' set in ruined Europe and an exquisite story inspired by a modern day Charlotta Lukov. And who could resist a story that contains not only Lydia Bennet and Wickham but the adorable Ladies of Llangollen? As a sequel to the equally enjoyable 'Dancing With Mr Darcy' this is excellent and it is perfect for short story aficionados and Austen fans and highly recommendable.
