The author targets people who have little or no introduction of the fundamentals of geology. From there he does a satisfactory job describing principles and rock types and their distribution. This seems to be about right for a 2nd to 6th grade level young person, but maybe on to 8th grade.

In Texas, geology-related topics are covered in 5th grade and this would fit into that quite well. The book does cover a variety of rock and mineral topics and the photos and illustrations are good and helpful. Format is the standard grade-school 32 page illustrated paperback, but with glossy paper for superior photos. The rock and mineral topics are covered under the basic geological principles and processes framework which is good. ( )
