A YA fantasy series that start out strong. I’ve had this series on my shelves for more than over a year. I read the Six of Crows duology maybe 2 years ago. After liking it so much I had to read the trilogy that came before it. I already read a couple of reviews and I knew a shouldn’t get my hopes up. Luckily the hopes that I still had were met and this turned out to be a fun time.

The story is about Alina. An orphan living in the kingdom of Ravka, a Land inspired by the Russian dynasty in 1700. Ravka is a land where some people are Grisha; people with extraordinary abilities. She is put in an orphanage with Mal another orphan at a young age. They grow up together and become best friends. Later in life Alina is working for the First army as a mapmaker. After trying to cross a dangerous area in the land call the Fold she meets the Darkling. A Grisha with the unique power to amplify others. Alina finds out she also has a unique power; the Darkling takes her to the king’s castle to train her. She has to survive the brutal training they have prepared for her and figure out what the Darkling is planning that involves the whole kingdom of Ravka.

I quite liked this one. It was nothing groundbreaking or mind-blowing but I actually enjoyed myself. After reading the Six of Crows duology I was curious what the world would look like on the main land of Ravka. The characters were just fine for me. I liked that we get to follow Alina as she makes the discovery that she has powers to all the hidden pain and suffering that was trapped inside of her. The closest side characters were also fine. Mal and the Darkling were two very different voices and even though we don’t get to see a whole lot of the Darkling I liked him. All of the other characters like the Grisha ones or the whole palace staff were very one dimensional. They were not as fleshed out as I would have liked them to be. Like the only friend that Alina makes at the palace, Genya? I can’t even remember her name. She had way too little to do except hanging around Alina whenever she needed someone. The world building I’m indecisive about. The idea of a “fantasy” world based on Russia sounds interesting. Bardugo does get the job done for like maybe 75%. I had the same problem with this as I had with the duology. There are some bits and pieces that I just don’t get. It feels like getting thrown into a story and having to learn all the tips and tricks without any explanation. The writing style was good, keeping in mind that this was her first novel. It’s an interesting story and very easy to read. What it has going for it is that it feels and reads like nothing else. Even though the tropes are the same for every YA series it didn’t bother me as much because the setting feels very fresh and new.

A fun and easy time reading about a girl who is the chosen one to save the kingdom ( )

Meh. The book seemed unbalanced to me. There was an enormous amount of visual description of the world, but lacked how the magic system worked or was organized. There was also a lot of "hurry up and wait" with not only the action, but also the relationships between characters, most specifically Alina and the Darkling. ( )

I read and heard so much about the Grisha trilogy that I decided I had to read these books. Luckily, Shadow and Bone ebook was on sale last week and I didn’t miss the opportunity; finally, finished it today in a single sitting. I just couldn’t put it down. The plot was great, the Grisha powers were quite novel and the characters were amazing.

Alina and Mal have grown up together in an orphanage. She has always secretly been in love with him but he hasn’t realized it yet. When they were tested for magical powers in their childhood, they didn’t show any affiliation; so Mal has become a tracker and Alina is a cartographer for the military. Their life takes a turn when they are ordered to cross the Shadow Fold – the darkness which caused a rift separating the kingdom of Ravka into two; which houses the monsters voltra who show no mercy on anyone trying to cross the darkness. When the skiff they are traveling in is attacked by the voltra, Alina unleashes her unknown power and saves everyone from imminent death. This is where Alina and Mal get separated because she is sent off to the Little Palace, home and training ground of the Grisha. When the Darkling, head of the Grisha, enlightens her that she is the only Sun Summoner in the kingdom and they could together destroy the Shadow Fold, bringing peace to the kingdom – she finally lets herself believe that she has found her destiny. But is everything as it appears? Is she in danger from just the kingdom’s enemies or from within the kingdom itself? Who are her true friends? Will she succeed in fulfilling her destiny?

There is not a whole lot of world building in the book but I really enjoyed reading about the different types of Grisha. Alina starts off as a frail, sickly girl who doesn’t believe she has any powers or special qualities but finally embraces the truth and finds her true happiness that she had been suppressing her whole life. There is a scene in the book when she, for the first time, accepts herself for who she is and it is probably one of the most powerful scenes of a female character I have read in recent times, especially in YA. Her character growth is fantastic and I can’t wait to see what she does next. The Darkling is amazing – that’s all I can say. I kept waiting for more scenes of him, with Alina and I would be ecstatic if there was a book with just the two of them. I didn’t really enjoy Mal’s character, but he is extremely loyal to Alina and that’s enough for me to root for him. I also liked the side characters, especially Genya and Baghra – we can never really tell where their loyalties lie and their motivations remain a little ambiguous. And then ending is just WOW – total badass. I just can’t wait to pick up Siege and Storm and drown myself in the lives of Alina and the Darkling and everyone else. ( )

3.5 stars. Would have given 4 stars, but found the book sagged in the middle when Bardugo was world-building, and the explanation and role of the glamorous Grishas (different classes/types/colors) was too weak. A glossary would be a smart addition to this series. Good lead characters: Alina Starkov and Mal Oretsev are orphans, raised together in the court of a benevolent Duke, who teaches his protectees to read and write. They really only have each other, but are separated when Alina's power come to light (literally) in the Shadow Fold and her power comes to the attention of the Darkling. A solid debut novel. I look forward to reading the next book to see whether some of the blanks are filled. ( )

The servants called them malenchki, little ghosts, because they were the smallest and the youngest, and because they haunted the Duke's house like giggling phantoms, darting in and out of rooms, hiding in cupboards to eavesdrop, sneaking into the kitchen to steal the last of the summer peaches.
