A sweet love story, but the real joy of the book for me was experiencing early 20th century New York. ( )

It’s around 1900 in Italy. Ciro and his brother are only about 5 and 6 years old when their mother, who has just lost her husband (the boys’ father) and just can’t cope, drops them off at a convent. She tells them to be good, help out, and she’ll be back in 6 months for them. Well, she doesn’t come back. At 15-years old, Ciro is hired out to dig a grave for a little girl, when he meets Enza, that little girl’s oldest sister. There is an instant connection. But, something happens soon after and they are kept apart.

Some time later, they both separately arrive in America – New York City, to be exact. Ciro is a shoemaker’s apprentice, while Enza is working as a maid (very ill-treated), and also finds a job as a seamstress at the Metropolitan Opera. We follow their lives as immigrants in the US in the early 20th century.

I really liked this. It didn’t move fast, but I really enjoyed the story, and was rooting for Ciro and Enza. I liked the characters and their relationships. The author’s note at the end tells us that this is based on Trigiani’s grandparents’ lives. ( )

I loved the characters and the settings. The story was so real. The only criticism is that the ending was too abrupt. It left me dissatisfied. There were to many unanswered questions. ( )

Normally I really enjoy Adriana Trigiani's novels as an audiobook but this one changed narrators half way through and really spoiled the tone of the book for me. Ms. Trigiani takes over half way through from Annabella Sciorra and it just doesn't work. The other problem I had with the story was the trite writing for instance, pregnant women repeatedly being described as being at their most beautiful and lush with child. ( )

I loved everything about this novel. The tone of it all was very lyric and old-fashioned, and not just because of the time it was set in. the characters were SO well thought up and drawn out, they seemed to take on a life of their own. The descriptions created were painted in layers so fine, and yet so intricate, it must be something like watching and Old Master create. Not once, did I dislike what happened in the book, or to a character, or anything.

The characters were strong, complex, and likable. The locations described in the book, especially the mountain villages of Italy and New York City around the time of WWI practically deserved to be considered characters in their own right as the story unfolded.

Subplots are rich with details of the lives of Italian-American immigrants interwoven with actual historical figures such as the opera singer, Caruso. This is NOT a sappy love story. It is NOT a bodice-ripper romance. What it IS is a beautiful story of love and family devotion and the dream of a better life.

This author deserves all the applause, acclaim, and awards she can get. I cannot wait to find another novel by her, and immerse myself into it again. What a love, this woman has, for the past!! What a joy to read her stories!! How lucky am I, to have found such a gem, at my local grocery store's shelves? ( )
