In Guided Highlighted Reading, teachers of grades 4-12 learn an easy and effective text-based strategy that scaffolds all students to return to a complex or difficult text for four different reading purposes. This resource uses prompts--not questions--to build competency with difficult and complex text for four close-reading purposes for any content area: Reading comprehension; Author's craft; Tier II vocabulary acquisition; and Answering multiple-choice questions on high-stakes assessments Sample passages from ELA Appendix B of the Common Core State Standards are prepared for student use for all purposes, along with how-to directions, rubrics for assessing mastery of reading comprehension and author's craft, and an alignment of the four purposes to the CCSS. Guided Highlighted Reading is a go-to resource for teachers to help students navigate complex texts and meet the rigorous requirements of the CCSS.… (més)

I have to concede that this book still leaves something to be desired as an ebook in PDF format. If it were a kindle format or even a physical book, it would have been easier for the reader to highlight. I would have found this feature valuable to help me with reading the book. As the subject is about highlighting, I feel that is important to offer the book in a format that allows the reader to practice the skill it is providing instruction in. ( )

I, too, was excited to read this book with Common Core coming, and I am always looking for a way to improve my guided reading. Overall, I was lacking interest in the book. I am hoping to have some time to more closely read it this summer since maybe then I will notice and appreciate something different about it. I liked the examples available, but would have liked to hear more examples. Like I said, I'll be rereading over the summer and will change my review if I'm more impressed. ( )

I think this will be the last time I request - or perhaps even read - a "teacher"book, because I clearly am not the right audience for any of them. In the same manner as other instructional texts, the methods presented are too simplistic for my students and therefore I did not find it helpful. ( )

As a high school teacher in Missouri, I see both positive and negative aspects of this book. I find the reproducibles section very helpful, and extensive (which is a good thing). It's obvious that the authors chose to cater to teacher needs, giving clear strategies and tools for teachers to use in the classroom. Every teacher appreciates that, no matter the text. I also find the research to be accurate and a good model for my classroom.

The negatives are that the reproducible selections are not leveled, making it difficult to determine what is accessible to my students. Most of the selections would be seen as boring.

The second problem is that there is no "technology" option. I believe that they suggest copying information onto a word document and using a highlighting tool. However, this is not an acceptable test taking strategy in Missouri. Students cannot use these skills at all in taking the English 2 end of course exam. Basically, there is no option to highlight and comment on a test which you take online.

Of course, I realize that the system is the one that is incorrect. In order to read closely, you need to highlight and make notes. This book could be used to defend the necessity of student notes and highlighting on the margins of tests. However, with the tests in the current format, the highlighting strategy is not beneficial to students. ( )

I thought that Guided Highlighted Reading was a nice strategy to guide students into deeply thinking about a text. I’m a special education teacher, and agree that this strategy can be used for all students. After reading this book, I tried this strategy in my classroom. I found that the students responded well to searching for the answers to the prompts. The prompts definitely framed their thinking and enhanced their understanding of the text and of author’s craft. Over time, I hope that students will be able to highlight pertinent information from the text themselves. I know that my students will struggle with the writing component of this strategy. Perhaps more ways to scaffold the writing piece would have been helpful. Overall, I think this is a good strategy what will surely benefit all students, especially students who struggle. My students were engaged in the task throughout the lesson. ( )
