I think that this will be the next Harry Potter series. Great book. Wonderful character development. Can't wait for the sequel which comes out in Sept. ( ![]() I was trying to figure out why I didn't write a review the first time I read this book, and I think (having reread it) that it's the overwhelming scope of the story that I can't wrap a review around and do justice to it. There are just so many elements to it -- love and magic, yes (doesn't that make it sound insipid? It's not), but also deep mysteries and earthworks and murders and wonderful friendships between difficult engaging characters. It's Stiefvater at her best, and I think what I love more than all of those things (understand that I love those things very much) is that it is an effortless read -- a perfectly designed slide into another reality, one so close as to be utterly seductive in all its parts. Like Holly Black, she is always giving me a story I could never have predicted -- spiky and satisfying and impossible to walk away from. Also I love that I now want to go see what's real in the mythos: Glendower? Those Peruvian earthworks? I think there's an Uffington horse, but I'd like to see images again.... Also also, Maggie writes the recap for it on Recaptains -- hilarious! I really thought I would enjoy this one but I just didn't. I wasn't very invested in any of the characters and just didn't care about them. I found it dull and uninteresting. I have read Shiver by this same author and I couldn't get into it either. Maybe it's just me.... This just wasn't for me, but I would like to say before I start that the author is a good writer with her world-building and descriptions and she is good with words and vocabulary. Sometimes, the words aren't always stringed together smoothly though. I just didn't like this book. I was a little confused about the intended audience. Pre-teens were I believe the intended target audience yet the characters are much older, so was it supposed to be for teenagers, preteens or YA? I felt like the book was trying to tell you to be scared or worried or happy and I just couldn't get connected to these characters at all. I guess it doesn't help when I hated Blue and Gansey, Blue was just such a boring little rude girl who treats her Mother like rubbish and I feel like Blue was trying to be portrayed as a, Look I'm such a strong independent girl who refuses to love. I knew already she would break that vow. She was also such a boring character to read about and I just wanted to scream, "Shut your mouth" Gansey, I hated him, he was so rude and put everyone down to make himself feel better. The worst part is how he's forgiven and everyone says it's because he is rich. He was a spoiled rich boy who was very condescending. Not every rich boy is like him and its such a stupid shallow excuse. Also the fate of the story was hinged on if Blue kissed a boy or not. Yawnnnnnn 2/5 stars I'm listening to the book. Wow I TOTALLY loved this so so much! What awesome characters and worldbuilding. I absolutely adored and found intriguing each of the Raven boys, and of course Blue. The world-building is simply amazing... the creativity it takes to come up with such a rich and layered world is just mind-boggling. And now, of course, I have to wait for the library to give me book two :). Please excuse typos. Entered on screen reader. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
Though she is from a family of clairvoyants, Blue Sargent's only gift seems to be that she makes other people's talents stronger, and when she meets Gansey, one of the Raven Boys from the expensive Aglionby Academy, she discovers that he has talents of his own--and that together their talents are a dangerous mix.
