Lehane writes well, as always, but this one didn't appeal to me as much as the first in the series, or his other books. Characters are interesting, but not up to his usual complex standards. Still a good read ( ) Boston, 1926. Live by Night is classic Lehane. Character-rich, compelling, and beautifully written. The story of gangster Joe Coughlin who finds himself in love with a rival's woman, in jail, and then falling for Graciela, a complicated business partner in Tampa, Fla where Coughlin works to reestablish a foothold in the booze business during prohibition. There's mobsters, Klan, corrupt politicians, and plenty of double-dealing. A fun, if not slightly disjointed read, that reminds me why every once in a while I need to pick up one of Lehane's books. He's a master wordsmith, and even if this isn't my usual genre, I couldn't put Live by Night down. I have to admit that I started this book expecting another Shutter Island. It's not like that at all. Instead, Live By Night follows a gangster from Boston to Ybor City as his makes a name for himself and becomes more and more powerful. All in all, it's a very good read, just don't expect something action-packed and thrilling. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
