Features a mid-20th century African American kid who's excited to get new red dancing shoes. While showing them off, she trips and they get muddy and dirty. But lo and behold, an aunt knows how to restore them back to their shiny fabulousness! Not too much going on here, but a sweet story. Highlight for me the way the little kid's mood is totally downcast by the dirt on the shoes -- they just aren't going to work any more. That'll be pretty familiar to anybody with little kids! ( ) 1i absolutetly loved this book and its illustrations. It has an appeal to my mind as an African- American child who grew up knowing or hearing about all of the dances in the book. Also, I felt that the book was very intuitive into a child's mind about how it would feel if a child lost something they were given by a relative. Overall, this book is a winner in my eyes.
