Jane Lanchester is travelling with her friend and tries to convince some kidnappers that she is in fact the person they want, so she's taken with her friend. George realises that what he's witnessing isn't an elopment and fake kidnapping, but a real kidnapping, nothing is going to be the same again. He first helps Jane escape and during their flight they discover that there might be hope for the two of them.

But the kidnappers have to be dealt with...

The story isn't bad, but the background plot seems to be a bit sudden and juddery compared to the romance in the foreground. Things get resolved very suddently and over the space of a few paragraphs, particularly "what to do with the kidnapper" near the end. I liked the characters (even if the cover wasn't right, ebony isn't a reddish colour) but the plot didn't satisfy as much as it could have. ( )
