This book is a short introduction into the mindset and practices that writers today can succeed with. It places a principle that writers are mainly designed to write. Nonetheless, there are also other marketing, technology, and networking skills that can help writers, like me, to succeed financially in their ventures.

Goins takes the position opposite of Hemingway and stereotype that writers ought to be "very poor and very happy." Instead, Goins takes the position that writers ought to write for themselves, and not for others, but that this act of writing should be able to support themselves financially.

I write because I love exploring the world of ideas. I love interacting with others' ideas in books, and I want to figure out how to be compensated for my interest. I'm not looking for a new career, but Goins' book speaks to me as I think of how to market my interests towards others' good and my own financial self-interest. ( )

I first heard of Jeff Goins through an interview on The Crestive Penn. He seemed full of energy and relatively down to earth so I thought I would give this a read.
There is some general good advice for people who want to write. The innards of it are aimed more at those who want to publish articles or guest blogs, and form relationships with editors and publishers, however the motivational issues are the same regardless of what you write. There is also decent advice on how to get started marketing yourself and how to develop an online presence.
This is a quick and easy read and quite conversational in tone. It's clear this isn't the only way to get writing, but it is the way that worked for the author. Chances are it will work for more than one person.
I would recommend this book to someone who loves writing and is thinking of getting out there and doing it. ( )

So I had this book for a while--downloaded when it was free on Amazon but I only recently read through it. Jeff Goins talks about his vocation as writer (being a person who writes), encourages would-be-writers to write and write daily, and offers some practical advice for success as a writer.

In this book Goins is one part motivational speaker, and one part guide. He hopes to ignite a fire under writers, to follow their passion and get writing, not to get published or for anyone else's sake but for your own. But he is mindful that to succeed as a writer, you need people to read you. So he gives some practical advice about developing a platform, a brand and fostering professional connections. He also gives some examples of literary submissions with publishers.

Not a bad little book. Won't revolutionize my writing but I will admit that Goins's passion is infectious. ( )

In “You are a writer” book, Jeff Goins will inspire you to claim who you already are. He will teach you tips on perfecting your writing, expanding your platform, and getting your writing published. If you want to fall in love with your own writing and publish something great this is a complete step by step guide and in the end you will be selling and learn to publish your book.
Jeff Goins tells us to speak in a way that is true for each individual who is writing because your life as a writer does matter and should be taken seriously. If you love to write, Jeff Goins says to use you passion, your voice and write because if you write what you love, your passionate voice will shine and others will see it and feel it. The secret to successful writing as experts say is that if you are supposed to imagine a specific persona and write for them! Yes, that specific person! This is a trick marketers use to find their ideal customer. They choose someone, give them a name, and focus all communication efforts on reaching that specific person. Jeff's secret is to write for HIMSELF: (Jeff Goins)! Jeff notes that if you stop muli-tasking and just focus on your writing and take all distractions away, then you will find your writing voice and be able to conquer all of your writing fears.
If you are going to fall out of love with the public approval, something interesting will happen: people will be attracted to your writing. They will not be able to help it. Passion is contagious. If you treat people like humans and write from a place that is deep and true to you, you will find an audience that loves you and your writing! In the business of writing, you are going to have to be a marketer, an entrepreneur, and a talented salesperson. Learning this trick will help you start to change lives by the writing you put out into the universe. Besides all of the above information Jeff Goins will give you all the success tools to write and publish your articles, eBooks and so much more. I have learned more from Jeff Goins than many writers out there as authors, not that he’s the best but like they say, “When the student is ready the teacher will appear.” © 2014 Jackie Paulson ( )

The latest in a great string of reads for me. Jeff's book like Platform, a book from Jeff's mentor, Michael Hyatt, is incredibly practical. There are great insights into writing and and encouragements to move past road blocks & obstacles.

The surprises for me in the nuggets of wisdom that Jeff served up that are beyond his years. Good read! ( )
