Much better than I expected.

> “Shoot,” I say quietly. I turn around and stare at the ground, trying to tell the intruder’s footprints in the snow and slush from my own. Big snowflakes are tumbling down, one at a time, as if they’ve agreed in advance to take turns. My heart slowly decelerates.

> The little hand on Naomi’s watch makes its way around to the hour, and slips past it, and the lazy Susan gets empty, stray noodles and empty soy-sauce packets littering our plates like shed snakeskins, and now I’m telling her my whole story: my father the professor, my mother who worked at the police station, the whole bit, how they were killed when I was twelve years old. The premise of this book is pure gold, unexpected and fresh yet almost inevitable: A murder investigation in the shadow of impending apocalypse. Hank Palace, freshly promoted to the rank of detective, is doggedly pursuing leads in a murder case everyone else in Concord, NH seems happy to write off as a suicide, and they might have a point: With a 6.5 KM wide asteroid barreling down at the planet and global apocalypse a certainty in just a few short months, suicides are a commonplace. But Palace, a methodical and quirky loner in the grand tradition of fictional detectives, just won't let the case go.

The central mystery here isn't the greatest yarn ever told, but the unique setting more than makes up for any shortcomings on that end. Winters does a fantastic job of teasing out details of the slow-motion apocalypse unfolding as the asteroid 2011GV1, also known as Maia, hurtles towards our doomed planet. The author lavishes attention on the laws and norms that govern our country and economy and the fragility of those standards in the face of danger... Habeas corpus has been suspended, accused criminals are held indefinitely pending trail, and being charged on even a minor offense is now the equivalent of serving life without parole. The economy has imploded, leaving people without meaningful work. Neglected infrastructure is failing, buildings are left unfinished half-built, and the police are ignoring investigative work to focus on keeping a tenuous order. Those with the means are abandoning their responsibilities to go "Bucket List" or stockpiling guns and food, while those in more dire straits are escaping into the cheaper oblivion of drug use, or, more simply, death. Squint and you can see more than a passing resemblance to the world we live in and its anxieties and fears... Even more so now than when the book was released in 2012.

While some might consider this to be faint praise, I mean this in the best way possible: The Last Policeman has all the makings of a fantastic TV show, and my hope is that the producers are able to create something that matches the dark, intelligent, and philosophical source material. Looking forward to reading [b:Countdown City|16046748|Countdown City (The Last Policeman, #2)|Ben H. Winters|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1366897800s/16046748.jpg|21826110] next. ( )

Enjoyable but not memorable. I finished this a week ago but now all I can recall was something vague about a dedicated detective solving a case that everybody else thought was suicide while the rest of the world was in a panic about approaching doom. ( )

Delightfully noir—on top of the clear dystopia. Not my usual sort of book, generally, but I'm intrigued by the premise and by the main character, and I've queued up the remaining two books in the trilogy. ( )

The book had an interesting premise but it didn't hold my attention. I could have sworn this was written by a Scandinavian author and had to constantly remind myself that this occurs in America. The horror of knowing that an asteroid was headed to earth and all would die in six months lead to a huge breakdown in communications, transportation, and of course law enforcement so trying to solve a murder was quite a challenge. And did it even matter? To Detective Hank Palace it did. ( )

I'm staring at the insurance man and he's staring at me, two cold gray eyes behind old-fashioned tortoiseshell frames, and I'm having this awful and inspiring feeling, like holy moly this is real, and I don't know if I'm ready, I really don't.
