This book is a good example of Realistic Fiction because it is a situation that could happen in real life. The setting of the story is a backdrop setting. It is a good example of a backdrop setting because it could be anywhere and at any time.

I have vivid memories of when I was a little girl standing in a spacious and comfortable kitchen gazing out the window. Invariably I would make a plea to no one on particular ‘I want something exciting to do’. In this way I apparently plagued my mother. Interestingly her response was invariably to go and choose a book ! For the little boy in this deceptively simple children’s book he chooses to dream himself into a world where traditional story characters are prevalent and pretty much a normal occurrence!

John Prater’s choice of characters is delightful with Goldilocks, wolves not to mention a giant all making an appearance! His use of simple rhyming language will appeal to young readers and adults sharing this book alike. Opportunities for discussion and giggling are plentiful in this delightful book, my first for Children’s Book Week. ( )
