All the technical details and swashbuckling action scenes readers have come to expect from Dewey Lambdin are present in this eighth installment in the Alan Lewrie Naval Adventures series. Fresh from his successes along the French coast, Commander Alan Lewrie is dispatched to the Adriatic to patrol the shores of Italy and intercept any French ships trying to reinforce Napoleon's armies. The four ship squadron the HMS Jester has joined emerge victorious from the first few skirmishes, but it soon becomes evident, even to Lewrie, that the British forces need reinforcements. The aid they receive, however, might be the most terrifying aspect of the war yet...and a lethal mistake. Expertly weaving late eighteenth and early nineteenth century naval and military history into a believable and engaging plot, Jester's Fortune will transport readers to the exciting period of history when Brittania ruled the waves. Jesters Fortune – Alan Lewrie – 1796-basically does things many of “males” maybe some females too want to do – wanted to do when we were younger or did. That is drink and party a lot with friends – eat wonderful food – bed tons of women – in other words be bad boys. He admits he likes sex and just is a “hound” at heart. He also fights the good fight – looks for adventure – takes chances with his live for his King and friends and take the side of good. He also does some things in that direction that many of would not… cheat on our wives or loved ones… get our selves rich by stealing– from enemies- admit our fears of people or a fight. He also admits to himself that he tells his bosses what they want to hear sometimes – like we all do or to get ahead or keep out of trouble…his life is more like ours – lots of ups and downs – never just smooth with victory at the end. Lots of choices – many bad with regrets and consequences for momentary pleasure or gain… Through his books he has matured somewhat as a character but he always has some flaw or failure or some past misdeed that comes home to roost… Alan Lewrie is not for everyone but I have to admit I enjoy his conflicts and his sense of humor and wonder how it will all turn out.
