Really enjoyed a world where the populations are diverse as heck, and the stories were excellent as well. ( )

I enjoyed the relationship development in this book, but the actual A-plot which came to the forefront in the last third of the book was strange, and not that interesting. ( )

Moon is a Raksura, a type of flying shapeshifter, who has a backstory of surviving on his own and not even knowing he was a Raksura until a line grandfather from the Indigo Cloud court found him and brought him to Indigo Cloud. That backstory is recounted in the previous book(s), which I haven't read yet. At the start of this book, Moon is settling in to Indigo Cloud as consort to Jade, sister queen of the court. He's still not feeling totally secure, and what security he does have gets a major blow when visitors arrive with the news that another court, Opal Night, is claiming him as the lost son of their dominant queen, Malachite, and wants him back immediately.

What follows is a wonderful exploration of a very interesting world, along with adventure, derring-do, and oh yes, Moon's personal trauma as he gets to know his birth family, tries to figure out if anyone (even Jade) is on his side, and finds out what really happened when he was separated from his family forty turns ago.

I honestly found this totally absorbing. Even though I didn't know background material that Wells assumes readers have already learned from the previous books didn't slow down my enjoyment much if at all. The Raksura are a fascinating creation, very enjoyable to get to know, and the characters are extremely well done, complex, interesting, and likable.

A great read. Recommended.

I bought this book. ( )

Moon’s life is turned upside down when the court receives information about his family of origin.

This is probably my favourite of the three books. All the poignant and/or important conversations and confrontations! Some of the most significant people in Moon’s life get to show Moon just how much he matters to them - that he is accepted and understood and can count on them to be there for him. There’s recognition that Moon is still dealing with trauma which happened years ago - and that he’s not the only one.

I continue to be much more interested in Moon having FEELINGS about his past and about how he now fits into Raksura society than in the Raksura fighting against the Fell, as compelling and tense as that is. So I was a tiny bit disappointed when the action plot interrupted a story I was enjoying enormously.

That said, it was still gripping storytelling, with vivid worldbuilding, and I was hooked.

I do wish that the final chapter had involved more showing and less telling, because I wanted to see Moon’s reaction to certain events, and more of his interactions with certain new characters - but hopefully there will be more of that in the other books. There are a couple of collections of novellas and short stories, and a couple of novels set after this one, and I plan on reading all of them.

A satisfying resolution to the various threads and themes which have been running throughout the trilogy.

Most of my favourite quotes seem a bit too spoilery or dependent upon context. Hmmm…

Miserable, Chime leaned against Moon’s shoulder and said, “I really don’t want to burn or get eaten, so will you promise to kill me before that happens?”
That was just another weight on Moon’s sinking heart, but he put an arm around Chime and hugged. “Yes.”
Lithe huddled in on herself. “Me too, please.”
Moon could tell he was going to end up killing everybody except Saffron, who was the only one he wouldn’t have minded killing. “Let’s figure out what we’re going to do, first.”
