Smallpox was wiped off the face of the Earth more than 30 years ago, but an outbreak on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico has claimed one life, and the disease is spreading. The conclusion that the outbreak is the result of a terrorist attack is official U.S. policy, but the facts dont add up to terrorism. Tipped off by a former classmate teaching in Farmington, Sarah Lockford, a Washington Post reporter, teams up with Jake Overman, a medical researcher from the Centers for Disease Control, to investigate the outbreak. As the National Security Council debates, the White House readies plans for a retaliatory attack against Iran. A cabinet member with a grudge deploys Army personnel to New Mexico to make sure no one stands in the way of a military response. The Navajo community is secretly shut off from the rest of the world. Roads are guarded, and all incoming and outgoing communications are blocked. The only leak was the phone call to Sarah, and Sarah cant be found. She evades surveillance and travels through the wilderness to the outbreak site, where she and Jake discover its surprising origin. Forced into a cross-country game of cat and mouse, they race to get their scientific evidence to the President in time. If they fail, the U.S. may launch a nuclear attack. FACE OF THE EARTH is fiction, but all of the scientific and U.S. policy information in the novel has been scrupulously fact-checked. The story is frightening because everything in it could happen.… (més)

How would the government react to an outbreak of smallpox is the question asked and answered in this debut thriller by Doug and Linda Raber. The answer is explosive!

When an outbreak of smallpox occurs on the Navaho reservation in New Mexico, the CDC and the DOD react immediately and quarantine the area. Before the quarantine is complete, a teacher is able to make a call to her friend who is a reporter for the Washington Post. As the reporter investigates, she sees something far bigger than just a simple outbreak of chickenpox as the government tried to make everyone believe. Her ensuing hunt for the truth and the complexities of the government response make for a real page-turner. Once I started, I definitely did not want to stop reading!

There are a couple of minor flaws which is not unusual in a debut novel. Most would be cleaned up by a good editor. There was a bit more repetition than necessary, there are some punctuation and word errors, there were a few instances of stilted dialogue. These were minor and did not detract from my enjoyment of the storyline. I am anxious to see what these writers will do in their next novel!

I received this from Goodreads and I appreciated the chance to read and review it. ( )

Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.—Genesis 4:14

White House officials said the new strategy would include the option of reconsidering the use of nuclear retaliation against a biological attack, if the development of such weapons reached a level that made the United States vulnerable to a devastating strike.—New York Times, April 6, 2010

"Next slide please.”

Those seated around the table were silent as they listened to the man speaking from the front of the semi-darkened room.

“Gentlemen … and Ladies …” The speaker caught himself as he glanced briefly at the Attorney General, sitting to his left. “As you can see from the data, we have every reason to believe that the United States of America is under attack.
