"Douglas Ashton is the cold and unfeeling owner of the gothic Victorian Mansion, Sommersgate House. Julia Fairfax is his stubborn American sister-in-law. After tragedy strikes, Douglas and Julia are forced to live together at Sommersgate and raise their newly orphaned nieces and nephew. Douglas has no desire to raise his dead sister's children nor does he want the distraction of the tempting Julia living under his roof. Julia is struggling with grief and trying to make a go in a new country without much help from impossibly handsome but even more impossibly remote Douglas. Not to mention, she has to deal with the active hostility of Douglas's frosty, Attila-the-Hun-in-a-skirt mother, Monique. Douglas decides the best way to give the children what they need, get his mother to behave and give himself what he wants is to marry Julia. When he tells her (yes, tells her) she will be his wife, Julia thinks Douglas is (probably) insane. And anyway, she's decided if she ever has another husband (since the last one wasn't so great), he was going to be short, balding, have a paunch and worship the ground she walks on (none of these characteristics define Douglas in the slightest). One more thing, Sommersgate House is haunted by the ghosts of the man who built the house and the woman who was the love of his life. They both died mysteriously at Sommersgate months after it was finished. When they did, a curse settled on the house making it seem strangely alive. And the only way for the beautiful but frightening house to rid itself of this curse is for its owner to find true love."--… (més)

Yet another shallow and raunchy romance. Some stuff surrounds this core romance/smut plot but it's all very much irrelevant and only serves as the background.
One good thing to say is that this is very well written. Much better than probably 99% of the huge pile of books that have storylines just like it. So it is enjoyable as a light diversion but sadly there just isn't anything of substance to the book.
Be aware of dubious consent but she secretly loves it.
One strange thing I want to note is that the short epilogue tells the story of all the named characters of the story until their deaths. On the one hand, I appreciate that some people don't like stories to be left open but on the other hand, the level of detail of who died when and was buried where was very strange. ( )

I love everything that this author writes. I was leery about this series because it is so different than what she normally writes as well as for some reason I had this in my head as being historical romance. It wasn't and I need not have worried because it was fantastic.

I loved Douglas and Julia. My only complaint was I wanted more background on what Douglas did. Considering how he was gone much of the time without explanation, I just wanted to know more. Especially, as Sam and Nick knew. I highly recommend this book. Looking forward to the next book. ( )

Julia and Douglas are thrown together when their respective siblings die and left the raising of their children to them, with the caveat that they must be raised together at Sommersgate House. Douglas is very closed off and Julia is just what the house and family need to help the children get over their grief. There's also the rescued Russian maid, ghosts, and an evil mother. There's a lot going on and several side stories. It felt scattered at times and even though I love hearing more about these characters I did sometimes wonder when was it going to end.

Julia (Jewel) and Douglas

I always love a Kristen Ashley book! As I've read most of her books I save a new-to-me story to savor when I need a happy thought.

Julia is American, Douglas is British, a Barron actually, and they are in-laws. When her brother and his sister die in an auto accident they are left the couple's children to raise. Julia and Douglas are forced by terms of the will to live together in the same house. Ms. Ashley takes this situation, adds some delightful servants, a spy and a haunted house; it's quite a story!
