It can also be used as a whole class read aloud. Chester the raccoon is tired of having a little brother. Ronny, Chester's brother, always bothers Chester when he is hanging out with his friends. When Chester's mom gives Ronny a "kissing hand," Chester bursts into tears, thinking that his mother would run out of kisses to give. Mrs. Raccoon tells Chester a story about the sun and the stars and says that she will never run out of love, just like the sun never runs out of light. Mrs. Raccoon gave Chester a kiss to put in his pocket, just in case he ever needed a little extra love. Chester the raccoon is jealous because his mother shares her love with his little brother. So she gives Chester a Kissing Hand and then an extra kiss to keep in his pocket for later. She also explains that she can give out as many kissing hands as she wants. The Lexile Level for this book is, as with many picture books for young children, adult directed. The 580 Level is far beyond the reading skills of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten children. However, this follow-up to “The Kissing Hand” is a delightfully-illustrated tale that will enchant children and parents alike. It’s a perfect book to share with a big brother or sister; the charming story is sure to be a favorite, requested to be read again and again.
Highly recommended. (
