Stanley had an accident when a bulletin board fell on him in his bed and made him flat. You can see him unless he turns sideways and then he is only about a half inch thick. He is a great baseball player, but when his team wins a game the team he is playing against accuses Stanley of cheating because his body is actually flat. Because he is flat he can almost fly when he catches the ball. Stanley goes home and the next game he has, he pads his baseball uniform with his parent’s clothes to make him look normal. Stanley proves that he is a good baseball player no matter what he looks like. Personal Reaction This is a great book for children to relate to who are having difficulty with being different and also has the perception that kids should not feel guilty for being good at something. Classroom Extensions 1. Play a baseball game. 2. Use play dough and make Flat Stanley. 3. Bring old clothes to class and let the children stuff their own clothes.
