Simple, beautiful pencil and paper illustrations pull the reader into a powerful and mysterious wordless story. During the Civil War, a young girl becomes aware of someone hiding in her family’s barn. Author’s Note.

This book would be ideal for an intermediate reader. This wordless book shows the story of a young girl living in the Civil War Era who helps feed and shelter an escaped slave. The pencil illustrations are vivid and detailed and the lack of set wording allows the reader to create the story line in a personalized way.
Children fascinated with history will love this story, but background information could enhance that experience. ( )

When a farm girl discovers a runaway slave hiding in the barn, she is at once startled and frightened. But the stranger's fearful eyes weigh upon her conscience, and she must make a difficult choice. Will she have the courage to help him?

Unspoken gifts of humanity unite the girl
and the runaway as they each face a journey:
one following the North Star,
the other following her heart.

Unspoken is a powerful wordless picture book that shows the story of a young girl helping an enslaved person who is hiding on her farm. While there are no words in this book, it truly speaks volumes. We what the enslaved person is risking when men with guns come to the farm looking for the escaped person, and how brave they are for escaping when possible. We also see our other main character, a little girl, unable to allow a person who is hiding go hungry. She brings the enslaved person food and keeps their secret, even though she knows the risks. This book was very impactful, I found it truly an accomplishment to be have done without words. The illustrations are beautiful, carrying the story and helping the reader see and comprehend what is happening. This book is excellent for those learning about the injustices of the time of civil war. I very much enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. ( )

This wordless picture book is suitable for readers of all ages, and different readers may have different interpretations of the story. For example, some readers may not be able to interpret the meaning of the flag, but the reader can think, predict and infer according to the picture, feeling the courage and goodwill of the little girl, and discussing the core theme of the story. "What would you do if you had the chance to help a person find freedom?" ( )

Author's Note:When I was very little, I sat at the dining room table during Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners, and listened to elderly relatives tell Civil War stories - stories they had heard directly from people who had lived during the war!
