This book takes place during wartime in Chechnya. It was a very sad book (it is about war) when I wasn't in the mood for a sad book. That being said, it is extremely well written. The language is beautiful and the characters are deep and complicated. It does not gloss over the horrors of war and how people survive it and it does offer the reader a little sliver of hope in Havva's character. It also taught me about a place and time in history that I know very little about. Overall, I recommend it - but make sure you are in the mood for a lot of sadness. ( )

Wow! I am normally a harsh critic, cynical even, ecpecially when it comes to much modern, over-hyped fiction. This novel though, is the real deal.
Don't expect a happy ending. This is a tragedy but is also full of life and love. An affecting read. Brilliant. ( )

The writing was heartbreakingly exquisite. The story is gut-wrenching. I didn't know much about Chechnya and the suffering there. This book makes you so grateful for living in North America. ( )

From Greg M.

Set in Chechnya and spanning five days - but also ten years, from 1994-2004 - A Constellation of Vital Phenomena tells the entwined stories of Sonja, an ethnic Russian surgeon, and her sister Natasha; and several of the inhabitants of a village called Eldár, including a young girl called Havaa and her neighbor, Akhmed, a friend of her father Dokka's. After Dokka is "disappeared," and the Feds are looking for Havaa as well, Akhmed brings Havaa to the hospital and tells Sonja he will work there for free in exchange for Havaa's protection.

The omniscient narrative style relates the fate of even small characters, and thus highlights the random nature of fate in a country at war. The book is comprehensive, sweeping in scope, and brings the full weight of tragedy onto the reader.

Quotes

Caring for the dying overwhelmed her. She couldn't be expected to care for the living as well. (15)

But there had to be a quota. An upper limit to the number of miracles one is privileged to in a lifetime. How many times can a beloved reappear? (48)

She worked without looking at the man's face or hearing his cries as though her patient were no more than his most grievous wound. (71)

...at a time when all belief dissolved, the act of possession was more important than what was possessed. (81)

...the impulse...to let the man bleed to death rather than face the horror of saving him. (122)

Held aloft by distant tacks of starlight, the night was a blackout curtain... (125)

Everyone knew Sonja was destined for great things, but no one knew what to do with her until then. (170)

Her existence was so narrow, her energies so focused, she lived like a nail driving through the surface of daily routines and disappointments. (171)

Fact was indistinguishable from hearsay, so all was believed and all was disbelieved and all were right. (177)

Life: a constellation of vital phenomena - organization, irritability, movement, growth, reproduction, adaptation. (184)

What would she do if the war ended? Of all the possibilities and permutations she had played out in her ind, peace was never among them. (204)

Natasha...couldn't unlock the cellar door, not for Sonja, not for anyone. What had happened down there was still happening inside her, and she wouldn't let anyone, least of all her sister, into what she was still trying, still failing to escape from. (209)

...that hurt burrowed deeper than anything she'd ever felt, deep enough to change from the thing she felt to the thing she was. Love, she learned, could reduce its recipient to an essential thing, as important as food or shelter, whose presence is not only longed for but needed. (226)

When he felt like a criminal, he reminded himself that a land without law is a land without crime. (238)

And [Ramzan] still believed himself the victim as much as the perpetrator of his crimes. (240)

For months they'd run their fingers around the hem of their affection without once acknowledging the fabric. The circumference of the world tightened to what their arms encompassed. (286)

Of the thousands of times she had considered and still would consider the question, that had been the only time it had been posed as if an answer lived on the other side of it. (367) ( )

This novel is, among other things, a meditation on the use and abuse of history, and an inquiry into the extent to which acts of memory may also constitute acts of survival.
