The fact that two women traveled around the world in 1889 to beat a fictional record makes this book worth reading. Unfortunately, parts of it come across as repetitive (because they travel in different directions but on a similar route). Still, a fun read. ( )

Nelly Bly and Elizabeth Bisland were assigned to travel around the world for the newspapers they worked for to help increase circulation. They had some difficulties with the ships and trains they used but both completed the journey with Bly winning. It was an interesting story to hear about the culture for women at the time. Bly and Bisland both broke new ground for women journalists by doing this. It was a pleasant and easy-to-read story. ( )

This book is absolutely amazing! I have recommended it to so many people that I have met in my travels.
The story of these two globetrotting heroines, Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland, is absolutely fascinating. Their newspaper's hyping up of the story, their preparation for the voyage, and then the actual trip of them racing around the world and writing about what they saw was engaging and fast-paced. I absolutely loved details and insight into historical travel on steamer ships and trains and horses.
This is one of those history books that is wonderfully entertaining and engaging, while also richly researched with a wealth of information. You truly feel immersed in the time period, in the journeys of these two women, and in the characters.
This one is a gem that more people should know about. A favorite! ( )

Having just been disappointed in another non-fiction book, this was a breath of fresh air. While factual, the book was written in the style of a novel rather than a textbook. Not only were we told of this exciting race, but given background information about side characters and other events in the time period. While not a quick read, it was a thoroughly enjoyable one! ( )

In 1889 two female journalists, who could not be more opposite, embark on an unofficial race to see if a person can actually travel around the world in 80 days as Jules Verne theorized in his novel. This well researched book follows the women through their journey and features their personal experiences along with the social, political and economic climate of the world during this time. Though the book is not that long, there is quite a lot of information to digest and some very interesting little known facts.
Highly recommend for any history lover! ( )

A richly detailed double narrative of the adventures of two young women journalists in a race against time, each striving to be the first to travel around the world in 75 days, outdoing the fictional Phileas Fogg’s 80 days...The author also examines the shenanigans of the press, the vicissitudes of travel and the global power of the British Empire in the Victorian era.

She was a young woman in a plaid coat and cap, neither tall nor short, dark nor fair, not quite pretty enough to turn a head: the sort of woman who could, if necessary, lose herself in a crowd.
