Talismans carved into his body. A lethal darkness amassing inside him. A woman who calls to his spirit on levels so intimate and so passionate that his deadened soul screams in agony. Calydon warrior Kane Santiago has a past he can't remember, and a deadly legacy about to claim him. His only chance to defeat it is Sarah Burns, a sensual, courageous woman fighting to save herself and her family from an ancient evil so deadly, so dangerous, so brutal that no one has been able to stop it. She's inches from losing everything, and the one man she can't afford to trust is Kane…and yet he might be her only hope for survival. Kane Santiago was the Calydon warrior that had ancient designs carved into his skin. He had no idea where they came from or even where he came from. For 500 years he had been a Calydon warrior after being found in the gutter by Dante but he still had a huge emptiness inside him like he was void a soul. He fought for the Order's mission even though he felt he had no moral center.

Sarah Burns is an angel. They are very rare and not many left. She grew up in a village called Akara where as a child a black specter who haunted the woods called Los Muerte wiped out all of the angels from the village but a very few six hundred years ago. Sarah fears from the beginning that Kane might be Los Muerte but she also knows that she is his sheva and they have already completed part of the bond.

As the story goes on we find out Kane's history and who is behind the creation of Los Muerte. This person is making all of the just turned warriors turn into killing machines and he wants all of the angels and Calydon warrior wiped off the face of the earth.

Can Kane find his true self again - the man with a soul or will he forever be doomed to be a soulless demon called Los Muerte. ( )

2.5 stars. Not sure where to start with this review. From the moment that Sarah's origin was revealed, I knew this was going to be a struggle for me to finish. While I appreciate the ideas behind the concept of both Sarah and Kane's origin stories, it was a mental stretch to keep my mind from groaning. The repetitive fluff was rampant in this book, but under that there was an interesting story and some really good characters. Nonny is what brought this story from 2 to 3 stars for me. Loved every bit of her character and what she added to the story. I also liked Ryland's progression in the story. When Warwick showed up and pulled out a wand... I almost threw my kindle against the wall.

This book made me miss Ezekiel as a the story's lead villain so much. I really liked the way the Calydons and their history was explained and carried through the first 3 books in the series, but now it's been replaced or augmented with angles, demons and wizards. Not sure where it's going, not sure I will like where it's heading, but I still want to find out what happens to Ian, Ryland and my throb Thano. But, if Thano gets stripped of everything that made him a unique character in this series from all the damaged and dark brooding muscle filling up the Order, I will be severely disappointed. ( )
