Mediocrità. La storia della mia generazione.

Una generazione, nata tra la fine degli anni ‘50 e i primi anni ‘60, che esce dalla dimensione locale per affacciarsi a un mondo vasto, senza confini municipali, senza frontiere nazionali, un mondo dove le persone di valore sono pochissime, dove il medico, il farmacista, l’avvocato, il parroco non sono più modelli locali da imitare ma professioni banali, per nulla attraenti. Un mondo in cui si coltivano sogni e dove, i più, raccolgono solo delusioni e una vita banale piena di rimpianti per i sogni sfumati, per le doti non coltivate, per le amicizie e gli amori persi.

Ci si può chiedere se questa storia possa essere una storia universale. Io non credo.

Credo che caratterizzi proprio la mia generazione; una generazione che doveva riscattare le aspettative delle generazioni precedenti, le aspettative di crescita, sviluppo, avanzamento sociale, prosperità, ma che alla fine ha soltanto finito per conquistare e farsi piacere una vita mediocre, quasi completamente priva di valore. Unici valori rimasti a salvare queste vite mediocri l’affetto e l’amicizia. Forse.

È un libro che ha suscitato reazioni molto diverse: lo spessore e la lentezza della narrazione sono a volte scoraggianti, (ma, mi chiedo, è possibile descrivere un arco di tempo così lungo - un'intera vita - velocemente?) e le storie narrate possono apparire lontane (americane, persone che aspirano a emergere con l'arte). Io l'ho trovato convincente e mi sono riconosciuto seppur con una storia adolescenziale, nei dettagli, fortemente differente.

Anche a questo libro sono arrivato tramite Reckwitz (che ultimamente mi sta fortemente condizionando). Mi accorgo di aver fatto un percorso nelle mie letture recenti che passa attraverso diversi libri che, in vario modo, affrontano il tema dell'adolescenza (L'isola di Arturo, Qualcuno con cui correre, La scelta).

A well written and juicy, if slightly irritating, story. Like a hybrid of Gossip Girl, Parenthood and The Big Chill. The characters experience every pop-culture event from the mid-1970s through the Millennium. Gimmicky and sometimes boring, I found myself hating every character. But the reader in the audio version is so good, I just kept listening. ( )

I just loved this book ( )

I very much enjoyed this book, which was populated with people who felt very familiar. It's about a group who become friends as teen-agers at an arty East Coast summer camp, and their intertwined lives over the next 40 years. One of the main characters is a cartoonist, reminding me very much of Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons. Central to the story are a family who are magnetic and alluring to the teen-agers in the way that a certain type of wealthy, connected New York family is to their children's friends.The book is well-written, easy to read and well plotted and constructed. I admit that I found it a bit of a relief to be reading about characters I found so familiar and, in some ways, identified with. Sort of like the comfort you get from putting on your most comfortable warm bathrobe and slippers. I didn't find the book compelling, just interesting, which is not to diminish the fairly significant themes which the book touches on and explores in a natural way. ( )
