Fiction. Literature. HTML:

On his last day in power, with a blizzard threatening eighteen inches of snow, Sheriff Bittersmith is called to the scene of a crime. A farmer has been stabbed clean through the neck with a pitchfork. Two sets of tracks lead from the barn, and the dead man's frantic wife exclaims that her daughter is missing. Convinced it was Gale G'Wain, the orphan who worked at the farm, Bittersmith follows the vanishing footprints into the storm. Miles away, holed up in an empty farmhouse, Gale is alone and close to dead after falling through lake ice. Innocent but unlikely to ever stand trial in this corrupt town, he loads his gun and prepares to defend himself against the dead man's sons and the sheriff's department. Set in rural Wyoming in the 1970s and unfolding in a single day, Clayton Lindemuth's debut novel, Cold Quiet Country, explores small-town corruption and the lengths some people will go to exact revenge.

This was a really well written book. Very dark subject matter, and graphic violence but fantastic atmospheric storytelling.

The book takes place in Wyoming, in Winter as a blizzard gets started and there is a lot of back story that is told from various viewpoints.

Sa prose viscérale évoque des maîtres du noir rural tels que Tom Franklin et Donald Ray Pollock

Not a book to read if you don't like strong language and graphic descriptions of death and injury. But if you want a powerful story, vivid characterisations and fabulously rich turns of phrase, then this will keep you reading for hours.

The language was just brilliant. I've no idea whether the turns of phrase are from regular Wyoming folk or were invented by the author, but I loved them - "tall enough to hunt geese with a rake", "as useful as a steering wheel on a mule" were two that stuck in my mind.

There was an element of the paranormal in Gwen's premonitions of deaths which seemed inappropriate to me, as though it didn't quite fit in a tale that is otherwise firmly rooted in solid Wyoming soil. But maybe it was more of a mental disorder brought on by the abuse she suffered. That's a minor niggle though. ( )
