Varsity tennis captain Ezra Faulkner was supposed to be homecoming king, but that was before—before his girlfriend cheated on him, before a car accident shattered his leg, and before he fell in love with unpredictable new girl Cassidy Thorpe.

This book was relatable and I enjoyed listening to it.
Notes on the audio: I liked the narrator's regular voice. It was easy to fall in to the book and I liked that he did the exclamations. His female voice needs some work, but kudos to him for trying. It went by pretty quickly and wasn't a chore to listen to.
Ezra was an interesting character for sure. He wasn't perfect by a long shot. He dropped his best friend once he realized Toby wasn't cool to hang out with. He dated a shallow girl who cheated on him and was friends with people who only thought about themselves. Then he has a rude awakening after his accident about his life and the people in it. Toby was my favorite character. He was kind and befriended Ezra when he had no one else to turn to. And when Ezra and Cassidy broke up and he started to ditch his new friends for his old crowd, Toby was there to talk some sense into him. The way high school is portrayed, the fake friends and meaningless parties and finding where you fit in was relatable and is what made the story so good. I'm also very happy that Ezra didn't end up with Cassidy. She treated him pretty poorly and they weren't good together. She served her purpose and he was better in the end for being without her. ( )

Ezra Faulknor was just another teenager until he became a tennis star, and so he also became part of the popular crowd in his school. Then tragedy struck when Ezra found his girlfriend cheating with another guy at a party and he was badly injured in a car accident when leaving from that party. His injuries meant he wouldn't be able to play tennis during his senior year of high school. Because of this, he found that he couldn’t continue to associate with the popular kids whom he now saw as shallow. So he turned to his childhood friend, Toby, for company and developed new friends and new interests. One of those new friends was Cassidy Thorpe. His relationship with Cassidy soon became more than just a friendship even though Toby warned him that getting too close to Cassidy could be dangerous.

The premise of this book is that experiencing some sort of tragedy causes changes to take place in one’s life. For Ezra experiencing the accident forced him to understand what was really important in his life and he learned a lot about life, friendships, romance, and heartbreak during his senior year after the accident. The teen reader will enjoy reading about Ezra’s high school activities and friendships but there are some rather intense scenes involving drinking and sex in the novel so I would recommend it to be appropriate for the older YA reader.
