In this time period slaves were beaten it they attempted to read or write. She goes from learning to eventually teaching other slaves how to spell. They and other slaves meet in a pit covered in branches and learn their letters from a literate slave, though they risk their own safety and even their lives in doing so. The mother tells her daughter, Rosa, that when they are free, knowing how to read will be helpful to them. Although this particular story is fiction, African-American slaves truly did meet in pit schools, risking injury and death to learn to read. Rosa is a young girl in slavery. Slaves aren't supposed to learn letters and Rosa remembers when the Master whipped a girl for every letter she knew. But, Rose is woken up one night by her mom. She is taken to school and taught letters but has to keep it quiet. She eventually learns to writer her own name. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
