This book tells the story of a mother and daughter who are slaves and sneak away to learn to read at night. They and other slaves meet in a pit covered in branches and learn their letters from a literate slave, though they risk their own safety and even their lives in doing so. The mother tells her daughter, Rosa, that when they are free, knowing how to read will be helpful to them. Although this particular story is fiction, African-American slaves truly did meet in pit schools, risking injury and death to learn to read.
