The parents of a robot named Doug plug him in to learn information every morning. He learns about the city layout and what goes on in the city so then he wants to explore. As he's flying around he finds a boy to play with and then he takes him flying with him. When they are done the boy runs to hug his parents which makes Doug realize that a giving big hugs to his parents can show his love. In this book, Doug is a robot child who is plugged in everyday to be filled with more information. One day, he decides to unplug himself and explore the city himself instead of the information just being downloaded. The book ends on the note of the importance of showing love to your parents. I personally do not like this book because the ending statement comes suddenly and has no connection to the events that happen throughout the story. This book is a decent example of science fiction because there is an element that is more based on scientific discovery than magic. This element is that fact that Doug is a robot. In the current time, we use robots for lots of things, and it is being explored whether or not we could make a human-like robot like Doug. Because the fact that Doug is a robot who is very similar to a human, and that possibility is being scientifically explored, this book would be considered science fiction. Until the day he spies a pigeon at the window.
Doug's decision to unplug and experience the city hands-on changes him permanently and teaches him new lessons about friendship and family, lessons that hadn't been transmitted across the plug.
This is a lovely parable about the difference between storing up facts and growing in knowledge, particularly germane in our culture of standardized test preparation, shortened recess, and no field trips. ( )
