Shy scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne has two skills: reading dead languages and hiding in his office. So when handsome ex-Pinkerton Griffin Flaherty approaches him to translate a mysterious book, Whyborne wants to finish the job and get rid of the detective as quickly as possible. Griffin is Whyborne’s opposite: a worldly, confident man of action. So why has he suddenly invaded Whyborne’s dreams in a way that threatens a lifetime of control? Soon, the two men find themselves hunted by a murderous cult bent on opening the doors between our world and the sanity-destroying creatures from Outside. Will Whyborne give in to Griffin’s charms? Can they survive monsters, madness, and magic? Or will the secrets of Widdershins and its inhabitants cost Whyborne both his lover and his life?… (més)

***Before reading***
The audiobook was a huge letdown. So here's hoping that reading the story will be better...

***After Reading***

3.5 Stars!

Oh that was actually okay! Perfect for a rainy afternoon. And I didn't even skip the sex scenes. Yes that is worth mentioning.

I'm curious how this series will evolve because I'm a bit scared that it will be very... EuroAmerica-centric, and not in the good way. The historian in me already cringed a few times.
We shall see. For now I'm enjoying these characters and the bits of the occult in it. ( )

Percival Endicott Whyborne: scholar of dead languages and museum employee, somewhat repressed, and definitely a bit awkward. Griffin Flaherty: private investigator, and currently embroiled in a rather curious case. Griffin approaches Whyborne to translate the text of an old book, and Whyborne wants nothing more than to make quick work of it and be on his way. But when the two of them are caught up in forces beyond their control -- both paranormal and romantic in nature -- their hearts and lives may very well be in danger.

I first met these two when I read Remnant, the short crossover with K.J. Charles' Caldwell & Feximal. So I was definitely excited to dive in and see where it all began for these guys. And I did enjoy this very much. It is, after all, a historical paranormal mystery romance, and I'm definitely a fan of that. I certainly look forward to seeing how things develop throughout the series. ( )

Oh my giddy aunt, this was excellent. This is not a cutesy love story. There is death and creatures and gore and behind it all a glorious love story complete with perceived betrayal and a HEA.

I loved it.

This was kind of a first for me. My first JLH, my first mystery, also my first historical.

I utterly loved the writing, the setting, I love this overly pleasant, but almost mocking language. Which coming from one Mr. Griffin Flaherty was even better.

Griffin & Whyborne are both great characters with haunted pasts. I loved their dynamic. Whyborne is cute as hell. And given the era this story took place in, I expected a moderate steam level, or none at all, but oh boy it was hot. Mr. Flaherty has a dirty dirty mouth. ;P

The mystery was predictable to me, all the better, I didn't have to hurt my brain, trying to figure out who was behind all this. :)

The occultism was a surprise. I thought I would read a nice cozy mystery with some magic involved. The horror that awaited me was not pleasant. Yuck! But I got over it. The end was a bit too much for me, I think the author went a bit overboard in creating Blackbyrne's character, making him so seductive. The guy is practically dead for f*** sake, why the hell does he want to sleep with Whyborne?! Eeek!

The secondary characters were all great, whatever little role they had, even Bradley, who thinks oh so highly of himself. And finally an awesome female character. Christine is smart and badass, a no-nonsense kind of woman, who does not want to rely on men, if she could help it.

All in all it was a great first for me, a really entertaining read (y'all just have to see a drunk Whyborne to believe me). Looking forward to more Griffin & Whyborne. ( )

Second Read Review:
So it definitely took me longer to read this than typical, likely because of the historical nature of the book and the older style language. I didn't find Whyborne annoying at all this time around. Perhaps before it was the old time style of writing, but I found him quite charming in this read. The plot definitely got better as the story went on, much like I mentioned last time. I enjoyed this book. I'm glad I took a second chance on it. My tastes have changed a bit in the last 6 years where I enjoy more paranormal than I used to. Still not a huge fan of historicals, but this was enjoyable enough where I would definitely look forward to reading more in the series. upgraded to 4 stars.

Original Review:
It took a while to get into this book. I am not traditionally a fan of historicals so that may have contributed, but it started very dry and slow for me. About halfway in, the book started to pick up and it got more interesting. Whyborne became less annoying. By the end, I found myself not hating it, but I don't know if I am interested in the next book. I hear it is better so maybe but it won't be right away. 3 stars ( )
