One of the best books I read in my teens, and one of the only ones I still have on my shelf. This follows three teenagers, brought together by the curious wooden egg puzzle of the book's title. Two of them start having odd supernatural visions of the future, and they help to solve a crime despite the initial scepticism of the police. Not just about solving a mystery, this is about real relationships, and real problems which are just as relevant today as they were when the book was written. A really good read. ( )

Setting the denouement of the story in the vicinity of Brighton is an interesting choice; for children, it's an interesting plot device (mistaken for Moscow); for the adult reader, it rather appropriately conjures up echoes of Pinky from Brighton Rock. ( )
